Wooden Cooking Utensils

Nothing stirs a curry or a stew quite like a wooden spoon.

BUT

They are apparently very unhygienic - they can splinter, germs get stuck in the spoon and they are very difficult to clean properly.

Do you still use wooden spoons are you a 100% stainless steel chef? :)

50% Stainless Steel and 50% Wooden Utensils ......... Admittedly I spend an age cleaning the wooden ones but it's worth it.

Wood, plastic and silicone.

I also prefer a wood cutting board regardless of what people might think about those. ;)

I have glass cutting boards, but I miss the wooden one I used to have !

Wooden ones are also good for beating your kids with:eek:

At least that was part of my mother's reasoning in using them:(

I use wooden spoons for baking - somehow nothing stirs up cake batter or muffin mix like a wooden spoon.

Also when doing stir-fries in my wok. But that's a wooden scoopy thing*, not a spoon.


(*not the technical term)

Whatever I can reach first! I have wooden, plastic and stainless steel utinsils, but I tend to go on big searches for the wooden spoons...

Nylon is the way forward.
The wooden ones feel terrible to hold. Its like wooden ice cream sticks when they rub against your teeth! !!!! aaaargggh!!!

I have one old wooden spoon but I am going to get rid of it RIGHT NOW! Thanx for bringing up the subject Blunomore!

Soak wooden utensils in vinegar every so often, clears up any problems that you may not errr, know of :D

With boards its best to grind them or sand them every so often, especially if you ever cut meat products on them. They have been proven to hold ghastly germs.

+1 wooden utensils! hard to clean, but well worth it.

I have glass cutting boards, but I miss the wooden one I used to have !

How in hell's name do you chop properly on a glass cutting board without breaking it? I've never seen the point of them to be honest - not even aesthetically.

Back on topic:

I use 3 different boards - thin plastic; thick, large wooden; and a slab of granite leftover from the kitchen renovation some years back.

I also still use wooden spoons and I doubt any little bit of bacteria it might possibly build up is going to see me changing that any time soon...

So for the price of chopping slower, less efficiently and "on a knife's edge" (so to speak), you get to use a glass chopping board. Great stuff. I'll stick with the ones that I don't risk breaking every time I move my knife, or the board for that matter...

The boards are quite thick, not likely to break.

Apart from hygiene, what reasons would one have for using a glass chopping board? I can think of many negatives, but no positives apart from hygiene, and even then it's a stretch to be honest, as boards are constantly cleaned and plastic is just as hygienic, surely.

I don't see the issue being it breaking outright - it's the cracking, chipping and overall longevity of a glass board which just doesn't make sense. Although I suppose the same could be said about plates and drinking glasses...:eek:
