The Manatee Energy Storage Center – the world’s largest solar-powered battery storage facility – is now 75% finished with 100 of 132 total containers already installed, reveals a press release from Florida Power and Light Company (FPL). The battery is housed in Manatee County as the name indicates and is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

When completed, the system will have a 409-MW capacity with the ability to deliver 900 MWh of energy. This is enough electricity to power 329,000 homes for more than two hours.

“With one milestone after another, FPL is following through on its steadfast commitment to make Florida a leader in sustainability and resiliency as we consistently deliver America’s best energy value – electricity that’s not just clean and reliable, but also affordable,” said FPL President and CEO Eric Silagy.

The battery will serve to replace FPL's coal plants.

So what happens after those 2 hours are up? Load shedding? Or would this be targeting the 5pm to 10pm, 5am to 10am peaks?
Yeah, not sure how they are going to cater for peaks, especially evening cooking.
Load shedding is probably not a regular thing, at the moment, but a few cloudy days will cause some outages for sure, unless they have other means of power generation as well.

For that they'd need to have peakers, maybe some natural gas CCTGs.

Yes. I assume the Florida incentives for solar also assist people to invest in solar, reducing load on the grid.
So passing the buck as well :p. We've decided to go green, which means we aren't going to be generating as much as we did, but don't worry, we're making this your problem now.

If green means that the govt helps each person/family become independent and produce enough power to suit their needs, what's the problem?

Eskom used to offer rebates for solar geysers when they still had a bit of money left back in the day. Don't see this as being much different than that.

They still need to pay, even if it is discounted.
