what about Crime Tourism... we could try and get the russian mafia and other organised crime syndicates to come to SA to relax and do few jobs. Maybe there could be a bit of skill transfer to local criminals...
Kind of like a working holiday
...

ROFL! :D

Crime - Same Old

At the Community Police Forum the other day a well spoken elderly Muslim man stated to the Police Commissioner that it is sad that in his lifetime his children were exposed to crime and they petitioned Government et al and every other means they had at their disposal to quell crime, drugs etc. And he was dismayed to note that the same issues he was fighting for are still here and haven't been eradicated and now the next generation of children, being his grandchildren have to be subjected to the same fate.

Although not his own words at the time, everyone in the hall felt very disheartened after his statement as he was speaking from the heart. Crime is rife.

At our Local Police Station they used to petition for more Vans and New Buildings as this was the reason they couldn't function properly. Now they have all this and now the excuse has moved to shift changes and not enough staff.
Excuses ad infinitum.

A country that relies on tourism to survive is looking for trouble. Tourism should be the icing on the cake after all other service and industry sectors are considered.

SA is in real trouble.

well at least tourists know now, the majority of the time they arent told of all the crap that goes on here, then the arrive and become victims of crime and head back home with the intention of never returning.

as has been pointed out before on other threads, tourists in any country are the targets of crime, as they are soft targets - not knowing exactly where they are etc. I read somewhere that one in every three South Africans touring other countries are victims of crime

secondly and more importantly - the numbers of tourists visiting the country has been steadily increasing ( not going to bother getting the figures again)- so it does not appear that they are running scared - Tourism SA says most tourists actually return to the country

I have yet to see actual figures that show how many tourists are the victims of violent crime - but once again I am sure no-one will provide the answer to this

No excuse

@ Xterminator

Let us not make excuses for crime.
Crime is a disease that spreads and if not treated will get worse.

I think what many people are scared of is the increase in crime.
Or left unchecked will become unmanageable to the point that The Police will not be able to control it. Anarchy in other words.

The Minister and politicians like him will make speeches about how crime is decreasing, but that is only true in certain areas of the country.
Generally crime is rife and the perpetrators of crime are not going to stop unless there is a reasonable alternatives not to do crime.
Like jobs and opportunities for the masses.

We take too much for granted.
We may think The Police are doing a good job or are led to believe they are.
But are they?

What is good service? What is acceptable to you, me or all of us.
If you go to the Police Station and sit waiting for an hour to be served.
Is this good service?
If you phone the Police to report a burglary and 3 hours later a van pulls up with officers asking you why you called in the first place.
Is this good service?
No it isn't.

Yet we accept or are forced to accept this as a service from our Police.
The Police Force which does comprise some very able bodied people, also has a lot of dead wood and new recruits in training.
The dead wood is a waste of time, but what about the new recruits?
They see what the other guys do or get away with and they in turn will probably do the same? It is human nature to bunk-off.

To give you an example of how we know the Police in our particular area can do better:
We discussed this issue at the meeting this week of the CPF Community Police Forum.
When the CPF Members visit the Police Station to help out or just to watch we notice that everyone keeps on their toes. Why is this?
It tells me that there is no proper management.
Probably because The Manager of the Police Station (Commisioner) is not on duty, not in or he too feels like loafing and if he loafs or his Captains loaf the rest follow suit.
The other issue discussed at The CPF was that after a year of input we are no further forward than what we were at the beginning.
The same issues are still relevant.

The Minister was actually addressing the Public at Pollsmoor yesterday.
I doubt anyone from our CPF attended.
We have everything on paper faxed a gazillion times to his office stating our problems. The Minister should just read his correspondance and he will be informed. These Imbizo's like the one at Pollsmoor always end the same way with the Minister stating that this is not a platform to state particular issues raised and proceeds to boggle your mind with mumbo jumbo.
Seen it many times.

Sorry for rambling on.
But the Rotten Apple starts at the top and goes down.
There is no excuse except good service and that needs good management of staff and individuals starting with The Minister.

Don't accept that crime is not a problem in South Africa.
It is at a level that is liveable.
But that is not what I want for myself and my family.
Neither should you or any other individual for that matter.
Let's not make excuses for our Government.
Time they pulled finger.

I have mentioned this to you before but you seem a bit slow so I will say it again.

SA does not rely on tourism for anything. SA is the economic powerhouse of the continent. This comes from commerce, mining, agriculture and the automotive trade mainly.

I am not denying that tourism ads to our income or that crime is bad for tourism but before you continue trolling the forums get your facts straight.

Small thing I saw wandering the net
US GDP $13.049 trillion
Canada $1.105 trillion
SA $570.2 billion

So Canada has double our GDP but is a minuscule dot compared to your neighbours, maybe try sort your own country's problems out before trolling here? If SA was neighbours to the US we would do better than you of that I am sure. What was the last thing that came out of Canada apart from Maple Syrup?

I notice the telephone is listed as a Canadian invention. As most will know Alexander Graham Bell was Scottish born, raised and educated. Admittedly he was living in Canada when he invented the telephone but he had it patented in the states and only lived in Canada for 12 years before becoming an American citizen.

How desperate for recognition could Canada possibly be to take credit for Scottish ingenuity?:D

The zipper is one of the cruelest inventions ever to be foisted on male members of the human race. :p
