*Survivor Hillbrow. *

Ok that was classic.... as long as we can still laugh hey...

BTTB - excellent post and very brave. I do know what Im speaking about here. There are fewer and fewer people who have the cojones to come out and speak the truth these days. Seems to me that cover-ups are all the rage?

secondly and more importantly - the numbers of tourists visiting the country has been steadily increasing ( not going to bother getting the figures again)- so it does not appear that they are running scared - Tourism SA says most tourists actually return to the country

I have yet to see actual figures that show how many tourists are the victims of violent crime - but once again I am sure no-one will provide the answer to this

Written like a true ANC supporter. If you take your time and pull your head from your a$$ you might see the truth. Addressing the crime problem can double or treble tourism.

What is this garbage about calling someone an ANC supporter when they post something slightly positive about SA?

He posts verifiable facts and gets slammed for it? Some of these threads are weird.

So 5 pin bowling and some annoying adverts on TV :D

We invented open heart surgery, RSA encryption (kind off), pronto condoms ;) and the ability to drive cars with monkey wrenches....

Amongst many things, the following was also invented in SA or by South Africans:

  • Pool Cleaners (Like a "kreepy krauly")
  • The Rooivalk Helicopter
  • The Ceramic Discs used with Power Lines.
  • The Brush Tee (used in Golf, it's one of the most successful inventions in golf in the last 10 years)
  • Paypal
  • Several Gold Mining Methods was developed here
  • Artificial Wave Making machines
  • The CAT Scan
  • Oil from Coal
  • Pratley Putty - the only "glue" to ever go to the moon
  • The Speed Gun (used to measure the speed of fast moving objects)
  • The Popcorn Vending Machine
  • Colindictor (the first device used to record or log a telephone message)
  • Disguises for cellphone masts (e.g. trees, etc)
And many more. South Africa also:
  • has the largest Gold Reserves in the world
  • owns worldwide exclusivity on the name "Rooibos tea"
  • has produced the world's largest diamonds
  • changed the way wars were fought
  • led to the development of "camouflaged" soldier's uniforms
  • made massive contributions to the medical research fraternities the world over, including the invention of equipment, development of drugs and creation of medical prodecures
Not to mention the several thousands of inventions in the mining industry that is directly attributable to South Africans.

Though annoying as hell, the Vuvuzela is also a South African invention, and destined to ignite World Cup fever in millions of fans World Wide.

At our Local Police Station they used to petition for more Vans and New Buildings as this was the reason they couldn't function properly. Now they have all this and now the excuse has moved to shift changes and not enough staff.
Excuses ad infinitum.
I saw a police recruiting notice at our local cafe today (a sea-change?)

as has been pointed out before on other threads, tourists in any country are the targets of crime, as they are soft targets - not knowing exactly where they are etc. I read somewhere that one in every three South Africans touring other countries are victims of crime

secondly and more importantly - the numbers of tourists visiting the country has been steadily increasing ( not going to bother getting the figures again)- so it does not appear that they are running scared - Tourism SA says most tourists actually return to the country

I have yet to see actual figures that show how many tourists are the victims of violent crime - but once again I am sure no-one will provide the answer to this
We do not live in the world of the past and when the future has happened it is too late. Now. Based on reality now. What about embassy notices and insurance warnings now, and how they impact - that being our future?

Big difference between tourists being soft targets and being followed from the airport.

Yes tourism has shown tremendous growth but will it continue to be so?

I have mentioned this to you before but you seem a bit slow so I will say it again.

SA does not rely on tourism for anything. SA is the economic powerhouse of the continent. This comes from commerce, mining, agriculture and the automotive trade mainly.

I am not denying that tourism ads to our income or that crime is bad for tourism but before you continue trolling the forums get your facts straight.

Small thing I saw wandering the net
US GDP $13.049 trillion
Canada $1.105 trillion
SA $570.2 billion

So Canada has double our GDP but is a minuscule dot compared to your neighbours, maybe try sort your own country's problems out before trolling here? If SA was neighbours to the US we would do better than you of that I am sure. What was the last thing that came out of Canada apart from Maple Syrup?

Well for one thing, your Gautrain will be coming from Canada, that is, if they ever get it going.

Twenty years ago you would've called him a communist traitor for have a different view.

Back onto the topic of crime and tourists. Every tourists that comes to South Africa knows about the risk of crime...so does any tourist to Mexico and Brazil.

It still does not justify being exposed to the risk of crime but its better if you have information at hand. I don't think the SA government has ever told tourists that this country is free of violent crime...to the contrary the media have done a perfect job of marketing South Africa.

Refusing to acknowledge problems or taking responsibility is a typical ANC characteristic. I cannot see anything positive about the current crime situation.

Seriously.... wow, oh wait Google is not so sure

The Bombela consortium comprises
South African construction firm M&R (25%);
Canada listed, Bombadier (25%);
French firm Bouyges Travaux Publics;
major French rail and bus company RATP Dévelopment (25%)
Loliwe Rail Contractors (16,5%)
Loliwe Rail Express (8,5%).

And then
which includes Bombadier, a UK division of the Canadian rolling stock

So Canada has a company which is a quarter of the project but not really, since it's the UK division that got the job...

Great comeback.

Tip of the week for the Canadian

Use google before posting trash on a forum.

Bombardier is headquartered in Canada. The Train (A Eurostar if memory serves) will be built by Bombardier. Enough said.

Actually, wait. Not enough was said. I (and others on the forum) am getting rather tired of your condescending tones when arguing with some of the forum members. WTF is your problem?

ohh testy....

My problem is the constant whining about everything bad in the country by a large portion of this forum and as soon as facts are published I get called "A leftie", "a liberal", "an ANC supporter", "a government spy" or I get told to pull my head out of "my @ss", "the ground", "the clouds" blah blah blah...

IisCandian contributes nothing but negativity about my country when he obviously knows nothing about it. The same goes for Confedarados.....

You don't like it ignore me, simple really.

So take it with a bigger bag of salt then. No need to stoop to that level is there? And I will not ignore you as most times you let slip a nugget of valid fact, but minus the aggressive undertone would be oh so much the better.

It all depends on how busy my day currently is...
Anyway lets not waste this thread with our personal conflict. Agree to disagree for now?
