**** article is ****.

The first one on the list isn't even a country. It's a city and an emirate (similar to a US or German state)

Miss the point much?

I'm not disputing the SA rating, I'm saying the Wikipedia article is ****, because it starts with a "country" that's not even a country.

There is a Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi, officially the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, (Arabic: إمارة أبو ظبي‎ Imārat Abū Ẓabī, literally "father of gazelle"), is one of seven emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is the largest emirate by area (67,340 km²), and second-largest by population (after Dubai),[1] accounting for approximately 86% of the total land area of the UAE. The seat of the President of the United Arab Emirates is located in Abu Dhabi city, which also hosts many oil companies, foreign embassies and the federal cabinet.

Any idea since when South Africa has been downgraded to the BBB status? Below BBB is BB+ and below that BB-. Anything lower then BB- is junk ! ! ! South Africa used to mix with the best of the best. Now SA is not even best in Africa WTF

How can we have such a poor credit rating when the USA has trillions and trillions dollars of debt.

Pointless ratings IMHO.

DOn't worry, Michael Moore has called for Obama to arrest all the heads of the ratings agencies. That will solve the US debt problem!

S&P just cut ratings on municipal bonds, next it will move on to American companies.

Botswana has had the best rating in Africa for ages, that's why Malema has a problem with them - they have to be dragged down to the lowest common denominator.

Ratings agencies are backed by government mandate I think, and you should never go on their ratings entirely, their ratings should match your knowledge of the debt instrument and its riskiness.

E.G. Those CDS instruments I think where all the mortgages were repackegd into were rated AAA by S&P, the same as sovereign debt. Which is laughable because about 65% of the mortgages bundled into them were risky debtors.

They are accountable to themselves and the investors they provide ratings to. Incorrect ratings result in a major brand problem for them so for the most part, they are effectively self-regulated considering the competitive nature of ratings. Ratings however are only one piece of the puzzle - they certainly aren't the be all and end all of an instrument...
