Lets throw this out for discussion .

We all know that MMO's are popping up everywhere nowadays.
From WAR to Conan and the coming Starwars KOTOR and so on ...

Fact of the matter is Blizzard ( WoW ) is still going very strong.
I however have played WAR / Conan / Eve / GuildWars and Lord of the Rings.
And to be totaly honest WoW after 4 years of playing still Rules Supreme over all these titles.

Now my question when Blizzard announces and release this so-called Mystery MMO will it be able to tople WoW and even break all of WoW's achievements ! Can there ever be another game that will kick WoW to the curb !

My opinion : I don't think so , Blizzard have set very high standards for everyone else , even themselves to beat .

PS : Maybe just Maybe if DIABLO turns MMO /wishing

World of Starcraft or World of Diablo will take down WoW i think. Purely because they have enough experience in creating MMO's and they can milk anything they want cause they blizzard :p

Think of a new Blizzard MMO as another MS OS...
Most WoW users will play it to see whats its like, if its good, they will stay, if its not as good as WoW they will move back.

I don't see this 'mystery mmo' coming out until wow starts loosing some serious interest, I'm talking 2011/12+ here.

Otherwise best bet would be a Starcraft MMO. They're already building up additional lore and interest for it with Starcraft 2.

A Diablo MMO would be way too similar to wow, in terms of class archetypes and it's time-line (sword and shields etc.) So rather than effectively replacing their wow franchise it's better to offer an alternative - in a vastly different setting.

But blizzard are pretty ruthless business wise - if they see another company aiming for their target market they'd very quickly change strategies to counter it, so guess we'll see ;)

Magnarmalok is correct, Bizzard announced ages ago that their new MMO would not be based on any current franchise but be an entirely new world/theme/experience.
From what I remember this new MMO isn't supposed to overthrow WoW but be a different type of experience which people can go to if they want a change from WoW. Will be interesting to see what it will be.

I think Blizzard have realised that the opportunities for expanding WoW within the lore of the world is limited. There will come a point where they would have to do a massive time jump and even then they will be stuck with the same basic continents and locations.

You can't get rid of Origmar/Thunder Bluff/Lauderon/etc without risking breaking the lore that has been built up for many years around the warcraft universe.

The only way to take it forward it to expolit one of the existing Blizz titles (Diablo or Starcraft) and build on that.

I think that many of the alternative sword and sorcery mmos are similar to diablo and as such Blizz would be constricted by not copying what has already been done.

They could launch a Starcraft MMO and even keep WoW running but the simple fact is that best MMOs of all time have been sword and sorcery types (EverQuest WoW AOC, WAR) so there is clearly an audience preference for that kind of MMO. This would indicate that doing a space MMO would be a hard sell.

I would expct that the new MMO would be based in a similar environment to Diablo and WoW but would have a completely differnt look and feel and would have a hint of WoW (in that they would have kept some of the cool idea and tossed the bad ones) but would be differnet enough that they could fend off any "oh its just WoW in differnet clothes" arguements.

I'm hoping for a Sci-Fi MMO. World of Starcraft would be awesome but they've already stated it's a completely new world so that rules it out.
If Warhammer had been 40K i might not be playing WoW anymore.

Short answer, yes.

Long answer: Even WoW has a limited shelflife. Simply because we haven't seen the end of it, does not mean it does not exist. There are two kinds of WoW player : those who've already burnt out, and those who will. Even if Blizzard were to not release a new mmo, the fact is that eventually other people on the market will bypass WoW in terms of attractivness, gameplay, quality and innovation. Just because that has yet to happen, doesn't mean it can't, or won't.

I know of people that is still addicted to DOTA and play the crap out of it.

Still good game and runs smooth even on really outdated machines.
And its still getting updated and changed new stuff being added.
I am burned out on DOTA long time ago about 2 years back i played in the World Cybergames Championship help at emperors palace was really serous about my dota back then.

But i still log on at least twice a month on local server play it not that good anymore since alot change and i dont keep up. but still fun game.

Same will happen with wow if something like World of Starcraft hit.
Ill still check in but they probably gone make it so that you get reduced price on WOW if you play WOS.

Saw Mythic do it with and WAR DAOC .

Fact is WOW is the best MMO of its time it time may end tommorow but looking back most will say it was awesome game.

Lets face it, DOTA is still an awesome game. I've actually started playing it again after an extended absence and it's a great way to let off some steam when I'm not keen to login to WoW.

Well, it's like how COD4 basically supplanted CS:Source. I for one thought I'd be playing CS for years to come but hey - someone came and did one better. Just like Blizzard went and did one better on Everquest. No-one thought it ever possible, and yet...

All it'll really take is for people to stop releasing less CRAP mmo's. It's not that WoW is great, it's that everything else is really kinda... bleh.

Which is why I'm holding out for ToR. Bioware can play Blizzard at their own game, all these tiny 2bit studios that think they're the hot sheit at MMO's because they've been around doing it for so long or w/e, can't.

To be honest as much as starcraft was an awesome game the story wasn't exactly rich like warcraft, I think an MMO based on it would be pretty boring.

Wha... if you didn't like KOTOR...well, that would explain a few things.

Starcraft had: space cowboys girlfriend gets turned into a monster, Aliens(TM) ravage the galaxy, psychic aliens kamikaze giant alien brain all the while terran political machinations deceit and counter-deceit result in internecine war while everything goes to hell around them.

Warcraft had : emo kid goes Darth Vader, emo elf goes Darth Vader, a different emo elf goes Darth Vader, they have a Darth Vader cryalong teaparty.

That's rich alright. :|

Starcraft had a very rich backstory, it just got eclipsed by the gameplay that murdered anything that had come before it and set an incredible standard for RTS.

Now my question when Blizzard announces and release this so-called Mystery MMO 1) will it be able to tople WoW and even 2) break all of WoW's achievements ! 3) Can there ever be another game that will kick WoW to the curb !

1) Who knows? We have absolutely no idea what it is.

2) Good question. I would say yes purely due to the exponential increase in internet users coupled with the fact that more and more people are turning to the internet as a source of recreation.

3) For sure. I played Ultima Online for many years and it was king of the hill until 1999 when Everquest was released. EQ then became 'THE' MMO to play and I tried AO, DAoC and AC but always returned to EQ. But along came that emo game (as Skurm so eloquently puts it :D ) and the rest is history.

All it takes is the right addiction formula and great marketing all neatly packaged and we will saying 'WoW? Pheh, it is like soooo yesterday'
