Hi Guys,

I'm trying to get a copy of the game.

I was told it's not avaliable in stores yet, I have tried downloading via bit torrents but they always time out and never recover. (anybody got a good bit torrent location)

I'd like to d/l it if possible.

Is there any way of getting it here other then amazon.com ?

An introduction on WoW!

Dear Blobnow

About a week ago I was in the exact same position. Where do I get WoW? How does the online billing work ? What does it cost?

I did some intensive research & came up with the following info: WoW is only for sale in the US, UK & other European countries, Australia and some countries in Asia.

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong, but I am under the impression that you can only play on servers in the region where you bought the game eg. If you’ve got the US version you can only play on US servers. European version only on European servers etc.

Except for buying the game, you still have to purchase an online account to be able to play the game online. There is a monthly fee involved which can be paid in two ways : PAYPAL and Credit Card. But I prefer the 3rd option: prepaid game cards. They work exactly like prepaid cellphone cards and one card gives you 60 days of online playtime.

Since Blizzard checks the billing address of you credit card and PAYPAL account, they will soon find out that you are not living in the UK, US etc. and terminate your account. So I think the prepaid cards is the only option left.

If you thought playing WoW is going to be cheap, you were wrong! It’s bloody expensive!

1. First you need the bandwidth to play the game, which means an unshaped account with your ISP and at least a 384/128K ADSL line.

2. Then you need to get the game. Call your grandma or any friend/relative living in the UK, US etc. and ask them if they can’t buy the game with a 60 day prepaid card and courier it over to you. Then make an arrangement with them to buy and post you a 60 day prepaid card every two months. I’m getting mine from a friend living in the UK.

3. Sign up and give yourself a phony street address. Play the game !

Price wise this is what it’s going to cost you:

384K/128K ADSL Telkom Line R450.00
3GB Unshaped account from SAOL R399.00
World of Warcraft (Once off) R356.00
60 Day Prepaid Card (Every 2 months) R220.00
Courier Costs (Once off) R300.00

Finally getting to play WoW Priceless !!

Hope this helped. All you critics out there, please correct me where I’m wrong! :)

almost all correct, but you can play WoW via ISDN which has better ping times than ADSL.

My wife used her SA credit card to subscribe on the european servers no problems. I don't think this holds true though for US servers.

I'm currently using my Mastercard to pay my US account's monthly payments. I've heard there are problems with Visa, but the MC works fine.

As previously said, ISDN is better than ADSL for WoW. 56k does work, but it's not that great.

Order a key from www.cdromshop.com have them e-mail you the key (they are very cool about this). Then you can either ship the box to yourself (and pay shipping) or have them destroy it (and not pay shipping). In either event, get someone local to give you a copy of the software. (I'll cut it for you if you are in the JHB area).

Subs are about R100 a month. SA credit cards work on EU servers (and US servers with a little bit of creativity). Or buy gamecards from the same shop and have them e-mail.

Have fun! It's a really cool game.

Try here for more info (de facto SA WoW hub).

http://www.ikonstruct.co.uk/wow/

I work out the costs as :

WoW (Once Off) : R300
Monthly (after 1st Month) : R90 - 100

+ Internet (You do NOT need an unshaped ADSL account) : whaterver

thanks for all the replies guys ...
I already have a 512K line with 30Gb BW .. so I'm ok there ...

I'll either use the HTTP Proxy or nukecap if the lag gets bad ...

Which servers are better - lag wise - for SA .. the EU or USA ??

And maybe I can get the GF's friend to mail me a copy from the UK ...

Txs again

I had the exact same debate with someone else about this. He argued back that although you get better ping times through ISDN, data throughput and latency is much better with ADSL Unshaped.

Depends which time of the day you play? I reckon EU servers would be better most of the time?

Oh yeah, unshaped ADSL is the way to go. But honestly, paying like R700 instead of R230 for the ADSL ISP portion? WoW is good, but not that good.

Though I see SAOL has unshaped 3gb for R399. Dunno how decent it is though.

Tinuva on this forum uses that SAOL account for WoW. Says its very good.

But you're right about the ADSL vs ISDN costs GougedEye. Theres even a 64k ISP account that one can pay R50 for.

I am also using the SAOL unshapped account. Pings generally around 500ms mark which is pretty descent. Get better pings on low population servers :D .

Only downside is I cannot access www.thottbot.com from this account.

I'm currently using a normal "Telkom" shaped ADSL account and only on rare occasions do ever get lag. (usually end of month is the worst).

I'm paying using my normal FNB Visa credit card, which works much cheaper that the gametime cards (R140/pm vs R85/pm). There is almost no difference between paying one month vs 3 month vs 6 month, so if you prefer the month to months basis take that option instead. I registered the account using a Canadian address (as long as the zip-code is correct it should be fine), then afterwards changed it to my South African address with no problem. (It even lists South Africa in the drop down)

As for servers, I hardly feel the 700+ ping. The best would be to join a US with low population, on the East Coast. I'm on Stormrage(High Pop) and Shadowsong (Low Pop), and I still don't feel the difference.
If lag is really an issues, Clipse is selling LowPing VPN accounts, speak to him.

Is there a way to demo this game?

Maybe like a 10-day trial or something?

:)

Well in a sense, I do agree with him, because a friend of mine has ISDN and in towns (with 100s of characters running around) the throughput lag really shows, but when you are off doing quests (in a party of 2 or 3) then ISDN shines in the lower latency department in comparison to shaped ADSL.

Yes, usually one gets an additional 10 day guest account (to give to a friend), if you buy the game. When this account expires, your friend can convert that account to a normal account by entering a proper CD-Key.

But, you'll need to ask someone who doesn't need it.

So how many ppl from SA actually do play WoW?

I'm on a PvP server - Dragonmaw - lvl 49 tauren shammy & lvl 33 troll mage.

What servers are you guys out there on? and what's the best USA server to play on for South Africans? (looking for one to create an alliance char on preferably PvP)

I think that would be consorting with the enemy :D My main char is a Tauren shammy.... and he doesn't like Night Elves...
