World snooker championship 17 April to 4 May in the UK

I think I tried reviving this thread for the WC a couple years back and it was no dice lol

well i only actually joined the forum in 2023 after lurking for a while so i probably wasn't around then - but snooker was a huge part of my life - i played league snooker and pool for over 20 years of my life when i could actually see properly (got cataracts in both eyes around 4 years ago and than had a detached retina in my right eye sometime last year - so i probably would play like a professional refereee nowadays [just spotting balls for other players] but i was okay when i was playing ..... not a century standard player at snooker but i could beat a guy or two in the local league and i was pretty decent at pool) so anytime you revive this thread i will probably join in

awesome!

where is this snooker league?

also do you know anyone that has stock of aramith cue balls?

how was the Grand Prix semi final with Ronnie and Ding Jun Hui .... Ronnie won 6-1 and hit century breaks in 4 of those 6 frames that he won though that was nowhere near the best he has played BUT it was still a great standard for a 48 year old

heres a link to the edited highlights of that semi-final if anyone wants to watch the 4 centuries :

IMHO the best he has ever done was 5 centuries in 5 frames [including a 147 max in the 4th frame he won] in a best of 9 against (surprise) none other than Mr Angry himself (a certain Ali Carter)

I didnt see the semi but I think ROS is redefining stuff the way federer did in tennis. I could see ronnie winning a triple crown in 10 years time if hes still interested and his eyes are okay

In Durban - there's a premier league and B division annually plus for around two years in a row there was pro league too for SA players - though I wasn't good enough to play in that - players from throughout the country ie every province used to come to Durban for the pro tournaments - there was up to R100k in prize money total split up amongst the players - Minimum they would get was around R3k to get knocked out in first round which basically covered their sir fares at least

Stephen Hendry Cue Tips is really good on YouTube. He does some interviews with the greats whilst playing some frames. The one with Dennis Taylor is my favourite, he such a wholesome person.

forgot to mention that around 25 to 30 years ago the snooker league was a bunch of 10+ different clubs and venues where 4 man teams used to play each other home and away - only requirement to be a league venue was that you needed two tables - so you could have two matches simultaneously - then after the games the guys used to have some food and drinks (alcohol was allowed after the games and at venues where there was a bar during the games too because there were few guys who used the occasion as an excuse to drink away from the wife but there were lots of serious players too) - eventually this stopped and it became a single venue with tables in a huge hall called NABSA centre - this was recently refurbished and they added a signature room with two tables with steel block cushions ..... one was even a Star table (brand new) like they use in many of the overseas tournaments in the pro circuit with the same balls and cloth as you would have in the world championships - though the conditions were not identical to world championship standards - it was a pretty similar table with similar cloth and balls - this year though due to the collapse of the Pro snooker league (the sponsor withdrew the prize money sponsorships) they have made that signature room into a Heyball venue together with some 9 ball pool tables too and removed those topnotch snooker tables - but they can bring them back if they need to have the SA snooker championships in Durban anytime

i will be able to find in Durban .... i know the people who run the local pool and snooker accessory store .... they will have stock always but if you are not in Durban it complicates matters to get stuff to you - where are you based - i can try and find out from all the guys i know on Facebook in other provinces other than Durban - Im sure there will be places in Joburg, Pretoria and Cape Town that will have loads of accessories including Aramith balls

i am a fan of Stephen as well as Dennis - some people dislike Stephen but thats mainly because when you win so much many people tend to hate you for it ..... same is happening with Ronnie - there are so many numpties that tend to get on the case of guys like Ronnie right now because as old and weathered as he is he still has the temerity to keep on winning but i really dislike guys like Hossen Vaffei, Luca Brecel, Ali Carter and Mark Allen who keep clashing with Ronnie just because they cant even win 1/10th of what he does so they have big mouths ..... though they need to all realize that right now they are not hero's but they are all zero's (even Brecel is a big ar5ehole even though he won the last world championship - he is more of a bigmouth blowhard than a player to aspire to be)

i can still imagine Ronie in 10 years time like this :

That is really cool, thanks for the info

Pmb so Durban is fine

The club was closed for a while since they were under construction modifying the venue - being from PMB would not be the reason why they did not respond - they just stopped the Pro snooker SA and made the signature room into a heyball venue, which is Chinese pool with a slightly bigger pool table - ie the same size as a 9 ball pool table - let me try and get you phone number of the guy who runs it - he could let you know the timing of when they open

Ronnie has just started his first frame in round one of 2024.

Looking for Title #8

Ronnie vs Stuart Bingham is 10-10 at the mid session interval of the third session of their quarter final - potentially 5 frames to be played - but first to three of those will be in the semi final

Last session about to restart

okay Ronnie made some uncharacteristic errors - and once in a while just landed up hitting the ball a bit too hard instead of using his great timing to make the cue ball bend to his will and while he did make mistakes Bingham still had to pot all the balls he did to give himself the victory so well done Stuart Bingham - he will play Kyren Wilson in the semi finals

so three shock results today :

1) Kyren Wilson beat John Higgins
2) Jak Jones beat Judd Trump
3) Stuart Bingham beat Ronnie

Dave Gilbert vs Stephen Maguire was more or less two players on par and could have been decided on a coin toss too but it will be Jak Jones vs Dave Gilbert battling to play in a final ..... and out of the remaining players i expect Stuart Bingham to go all the way - i think that he is stronger than Kyren Wilson unless Kyren has a really great day of snooker for the semi-final

Yeah hes nuts too but Ronnie has just beaten so many of the greats, Steve Davis, Earl the pearl, Efren Reyes, Johnny archer etc and he did this in his 20's.

I used to hate him because he kept slamming my favorite player Steve Davis but once he started just beating everyone I started liking him.

Perrie Mans would say if you want to watch a great player watch Steve Davis then he stopped saying that and started saying that about Ronnie but I haven't spoken to Perrie Mans for 10 -15 years.
Found this on YouTube.
