World's largest volcano could wipe out two-thirds of the US

Damn, imagine the amount of chaos this volcano will cause - it will make the Iceland volcano look like a walk in the park.

It would explode with a force a thousand times more powerful than the Mount St Helens eruption in 1980.

Spewing lava far into the sky, a cloud of plant-killing ash would fan out and dump a layer 10ft deep up to 1,000 miles away.

Two-thirds of the U.S. could become uninhabitable as toxic air sweeps through it, grounding thousands of flights and forcing millions to leave their homes.

This is the nightmare that scientists are predicting could happen if the world’s largest super-volcano erupts for the first time in 600,000 years, as it could do in the near future.

Yellowstone National Park’s caldera has erupted three times in the last 2.1million years and researchers monitoring it say we could be in for another eruption.

They said that the super-volcano underneath the Wyoming park has been rising at a record rate since 2004 - its floor has gone up three inches per year for the last three years alone, the fastest rate since records began in 1923.

But hampered by a lack of data they have stopped short of an all-out warning and they are unable to put a date on when the next disaster might take place.

When the eruption finally happens it will dwarf the effect of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in April last year, causing travel chaos around the world.

The University of Utah's Bob Smith, an expert in Yellowstone's volcanism told National Geographic: ‘It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high.

‘At the beginning we were concerned it could be leading up to an eruption.’

But he added: ‘Once we saw the magma was at a depth of ten kilometres, we weren't so concerned.

‘If it had been at depths of two or three kilometre we'd have been a lot more concerned.’

Sumatra's also showing some activity these days. If either one of those goes it will have unimaginable global destructiveness.

IIRC we have been way overdue for an eruption at yellowstone.

Would be an insane sight to see, utterly devastating, but I have a sick need to want to see it

The Yellowstone National Caldera is the single reason why my wife and I wont move to the states. Screw Republicans but theyre nothing compared to this monster. Genetically and in evolutionary terms its a terrible idea to move to the US... knowing that at any time your entire lineage can be wiped out in a second. Seems pointless to move there knowing that you, or your kids, or your grandkids will get insta-killed.

Here are two better links on the topic:

and what would happen when it goes off:

Stupid question, but I'm going to ask it.

Is there anyway of maybe causing it to 'drain' the eruption effect.
So... we drill holes or something and instead of one massive eruption, the leaking will cause a less type of eruption... that sounded so dof, but maybe you get what I'm saying?

Can anybody enlighten the Ook on how they're able to detect the depth of the magma?

Watched this story on Discovery. Some scientists are not 100% sure if it will erupt.

And which drill bit might I ask will be able to withstand that kind if temperature when they drill?

The forces involved are actually so large that there's flip-all we can do. Drilling relief valves, tunnels, whatever would be like building a big gazebo to catch a giant asteroid that's gonna hit the Earth (That's another story, we wouldn't actually know about the asteroid until about 30s before it hits anyway, unless by some wild co-incidence it happened to come from the 0.0000001% of the sky that we look for these things in)

There are so many things that could happen that would quite simply wipe a large portion of civilisation completely out that it's not even worth taking into account. If Yellowstone goes, you could be on the other side of the planet and it could still kill you in under a minute and hell, even if you didn't die immediately, you probably still would, just a few days/weeks later.

How's that for a ray of bitter darkness to shine into your day.

Also watched the disco show about the yellow stone caldera... the dust cloud would block the sun for the whole earth, Ice age & darkness ... at least malemma wouldnt be a concern anymore!

That's like using a pin to do a "controlled release" of the air in a balloon.

Is'nt there another super volcano in Italy? Or at least 3 really big ones so close to each other that they could set each other of.

All of a sardine Botswana looks like a great place to live.

Gotta agree with the comments that follow. Unnecessary sensationalism and fear-mongering over something that most likely will not happen in our lifetime. I wouldn't give any credence to an end-of-world scenario published by a rag whose journalist's times are better spent spying on celebrities.

From Wiki:

The Daily Mail was Britain's first daily newspaper aimed at the newly-literate "lower-middle class market resulting from mass education, combining a low retail price with plenty of competitions, prizes and promotional gimmicks"

There is a National Geographic episode which partly covers this volcano, was on DSTV about a month back. Can anybody rememember the title of the episode? It was about disasters or something to that effect.

Edit: nvm, got it. National Geographic - Super Volcano :)
