Hi there

I've been browsing these forums for a while now, just reading and getting a feel as to what is going on. I've wanted to get some sort of broad band service for quite a while now, just been trying to get the funds together, although, having been robbed and getting my pc stolen has somewhat slowed that down.

Why I want broad band ? Well I collect fansub Anime. As far as I understand this isn't illegal until the Anime is licensed in the country you stay in (which is like never in SA). I also would like to play games online. So I was kinda stuck between which service to go for. ADSL for gaming or Sentech for downloads. I mean if I got ADSL, I could still download, it's just more of a mission as I would have to organise a proxy from a friend or something.

Now here's my problem. I hear that Telkom might implement a local 10GB cap. That deters me from thier service quite alot. It really doesn't make sense for Telkom to introduce this sort of thing, just from a business sense. Sentech is serious compeition for them and they are loosing potential customers to them and some existing ones already. Why go do something that would chase away more potential customers and also the existing customers.

I'm also wondering how this effects companies like DataPro. They offer a uncapped ADSL solution. I'm guessing it's basicall a local connection to them and they act as a proxy for international bandwidth. Surely a decision like is being made to make sure companies can't do this sort of thing, in other words using thier Monopoly to run other compies out of business by making thier products no longer valid. Isn't this illegal ?

But what it boils down to, is when I do connect, Telkom has assured that I will go Sentech (or SNO if they every get this act together and launch any sort of service by the time I'm ready to get online).

Thanks

Hey synack, great to have you onboard. We have an ADSL line here at work. We are seriously considering switching to Sentech because of both the ridiculously small cap and port shaping. For my own personal use I would also rather go for a Sentech package. Unfortunately my home is not covered yet, but I'm not even considering ADSL. It's only advantage seems to be lower latency and I don't mind sacrificing that.
