Hi,

I just wanted to know whether its worth buying a Seat Cupra 1.9 TDI ? Considering that SEAT is no longer in SA, would i be able to resell the vehicle in a few years? Whats the depreciation like?

I was looking at a 2007 1.9 TDI Cupra for R139 000. Do you think this is worth it? It has around 60000km on the clock with a 5yr/90000km service plan extended to 7yr/130000km, including sunroof.

Hoo boy, this will open a can of worms on this forum!!

You will get 50 different answers from 50 different people...I'm staying away from this little one, apart from saying that it's a great car, but I don't know if that price is right, and I think you must prepare yourself for a massive drop in price when you sell it.

No idea at all, and it's not worth looking at the book on this one, the second hand salesmen are probably going to run a mile before giving you a price any way!! :p

The Cupra im looking at is a private deal, i should be able to drop him alot right? Bearing in mind the resale is not very good!

Yes, that would be the correct line to take, but you will probably find that the poor guy has already been through the ringer with the Dealers before trying to sell it in desperation.

You are actually describing the car of a friend of mine...the last i heard was that he was not going to sell it because of the pathetic trade in prices offered to him...but he might well have changed his mind...if it is his car it is totally magic!

What Cupra are you talking about? Ibiza or Leon?

Either way I quite like the Cupra versions of both of them! :D
Prefer the Leon, obviously.

Two words:

HELL, YES!!!

Awesome, awesome little cars! I was one of the unfortunates to get bumped out of a job when they got yanked out, so I know them well. Yes, they're a little plasticky and the ride of the Cupra isn't exactly cosseting BUT you will have a grin on your face every time you put foot.

The knock-on effect on residual value came as a thump when the announcement was made. You shouldn't suffer appreciably more on the eventual resale than what you would buying anything else than a Polo/Toyota. For the money you may lose out on, the smiles are worth it.

The only caveat I would offer is that you should be aware of POSSIBLE hassles with services and the availability of odd parts, should you need them. VW will keep their word in terms of continued support, but only as far as needed to save face.

But, that car will steal your heart...

Go for it. The price looks good - saw a similarly-priced 2006 model Ibiza Cupra TDi at a local VW dealership a few months ago.

Awesome cars the Cupras. Plus you will be buying a car that won't be replaced with a new model thanks to Seat leaving. That (R139k) is a good price already for a 2007 Cupra with that extended motor plan but it won't hurt to try and bargain. Go for it! Its great value for money and engine parts will always be available through VW. Get it, get, get it! :)

So you've worked for Seat right?

With regards to possible odd parts, what will happen if something would have to go wrong? Will i not be able to find a replacement?
I've read somewhere that one of the guyz had his turbo shot! Will you be able to replace this?

The SEAT TDis share the majority of their engine and transmission parts with the Polo TDi Sportline. If VW doesn't have the part in stock, it won't take very long to get here. That's mostly a problem with trim items and body parts, though.

so you saying that it's still possible to get the parts it just a matter of time?
