Why thank Vodacom when you should thank Apple?

OMG. What logic! Blame the device for doing what it's supposed to do.

Let me guess, Nokia 6110, right? Um, no. blame Vodacom. Firstly, prices are ludicrous, secondly they should put something in place to manage out of bundle fees on contract. Instead, they hide the process we are supposed to use to manage notifications and limits on some obscure webpage and happily continue to bill at will.

But... go ahead, blame Apple.

I really think the need to have a lot more notifications about your bill, not necessarily for data usage. You set a threshold (lets say R800) and after that you get a notification every R100 bucks or something. The people wont get surprises, Vodacom, pay me for this idea!

Notifications doesn't mean anything, by the time you read them, you could already be in the red with a big bill

Im sorry OP but you are the one at fault, not your service provider. You know the OOB rate, you have a smartphone, maybe you should catch a wake up and not blame other people for your mistakes?

Thats just my honest opinion. I have a widget on my homescreen showing my data usage. Took me 2min to set up and I always know where I stand. To leave your data on and expect no issues without keeping an eye on it is just plain stupid.

The OOB rates are crazy I agree, but you knew this upfront

Where did he blame somebody else? He clearly states "as I haven't changed the settings...".

1GB bundle from Vodacom = R150
1GB OOB cost from Vodacom = R2500

Do you not see what I am on about. I am to blame but let's be honest... R2 a MB? Are we back in 2001?

This happened to a friend of mine when he got his S4. His bill was close to R6k. He pleaded ignorance, and blamed the phone's default setting that are 'approved' by the service provider. He eventually got the bill substantially reduced, but had to pay some of it.

I feel for you, but ja - an open contract on Vodacom is scary.

I also feel that R2 out of bundle is high. I pay 29c per MB on Telkom mobile prepaid. So ja, VC is very expensive.

Received my account today. Average spend a month roughly R450 to R500. This month R2965!

Seemed my new iPhone updated over 3G as I haven't changed the settings to only back up over wifi. Needless to say that 1.3GB cost me R2300.

Also if you're really worried about your bill you can set a limit on it.

Does Vodacom offer this now? Last time I had an open contract with them, they didn't have the technology to implement it.

Yes they have a feature to limit, but it's imperfect. Meaning that you can still experience bill shock.
Give the call center a shout and ask about it

Ever since my dad cancelled his contact and went prepaid he's been getting all the lovely promotions like double your air-time up to R150 etc.

The amount is unfortunately due - error not on Vodacom's side
but it does appear that they have at least started to recognize the value of not being douches on this issue and it couldn't hurt to write to them acknowledging responsibility and setting out that you have corrected your settings etc ...

From a general being good point of view they should really discount it to something like what double the cost of the requisite bundled data would have cost (double because of network planning and what not), also the OOB shark persisting without adequate lock out tools on the data side is still a serious bloody problem and there ARE solutions

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be something set in stone, to encourage confidence and peace of mind when it comes to situations like these.
If the consumer had a time period 2 months - 3 months in which they could reduce the OOB rate to normal prepaid tarriffs + a set 50% fee based on what they pay monthly with absolute certainty it would be la tiny bit more acceptable.

So if you OOB by a gig and your monthly contract is R499 you pay R400 (R250 + 150)
If you OOB two gig and your monthly contract is R499 you pay R450

Would still a lot, but it would be a guaranteed resolution and less insane.
Atm the punishment doesn't fit the crime, just the pockets of the greedy.
