G'day.

I am submitting this post from work. Please don't tell THEM.

My long-serving DLink 2640U kicked the bucket last Monday. [Doesn't power up]

Naturally, I would rather not be paying for an ADSL service I cannot use, so I would like to purchase a replacement at some stage. I can probably stretch to R300-R400 this month, and around R600 next month. I realise that at this price I cannot expect anything designed to withstand a few seconds' worth of fire from a GAU-8 Avenger 30mm rotary cannon firing depleted Uranium shells, so my needs are for something that will allow me to connect to the internet via ADSL and allow my smartphone to do likewise by way of WiFi.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Maybe it's just the plugin power supply that died? I would check that first, you may get lucky without forking out a whole lot of cash by just replacing the power supply.

I had wondered/hoped that that might be the case [and that these power adaptors are cheaper than buying a whole new router.]

I wonder whether one of those multi-device adaptors would be up to the task?

My D-Link 2540U power supply died so I got a Ellies power adapter from Incredible Corruption.

Looks like this:

Then a week later I found it cheaper at Checker Hyper ....

How much did this set you back?

Also had a D-Link 2640U die, where it turned out to be the power supply. If you are going to replace this have a look at both the voltage and current ratings printed on your current power supply. You will need to get one that meets these ratings.

I'm not sure since it was about 2 years ago, about R90? Certainly worth a shot before just going to buy a new router when it could just be the power supply and so far it seems like this is the case most of the time.

You'll find them in most supermarkets. I bought one from a Spar a few months ago, I think it cost around R80.00.

Just test the output voltage first, the one I got outputs a little over 14 volts when selected to 9 volts.

@OP, don't you know anyone around you with a multimeter who can test it for you, someone at work maybe? That would be your best bet.

Looking at a google search says it's a 12V DV 1A power supply, which is fairly common.
