(A) No, Honda CR-V in that price range I think it better.
(B) On a SUV or bigger car I would always go diesel. Diesel has come a long way and the torque + fuel economy makes it great.

It also depends on your budget and what you are paying, so?

Yes, they are awesome vehicles. I would go for the petrol. I have a diesel but theres no point in paying the premium for a diesel powered motor these days.

Personally I would never ever go near a Nissan again. I don't care what cars they offer. They have no resale value and the build quality never ever compares to the German/Swedish/UK makes. Been there, done that, lived to tell the tale.

I wouldn't touch a Nissan on principle - I've seen first hand how they're manufactured locally and how Nissan SA is run (can't disclose any specifics). The Qashqai may be imported, but it still comes from the same company.

I'd say it depends on what terrain your planning to ride on with the thing. If its just for use in the city then dont waste your time, the qashqai was build for sand, dirt and crazy offroad. If your really just looking for an nice all purpose suv the go toyota fortuner...cant go wrong

The Quasqui is a mini-SUV
Bigger and "safer" than your standard issue people carrier.

However...

VERY limited off-road capabilities :(
Good for mounting pavements with a bit of extra boot space.

Why do you want to spend extra on a SUV that isn't really good as a SUV?

To answer your questions:

a) NO
If it's safe family travel with extra boot space I'd go for a station wagon. Probably the Subaru if you foresee some dirt roads in your near future. Why spend a premium on a heavier car that isn't really more spacious or off road capable than a regular station wagon... not to mention, the handling and fuel economy will be way better with a station wagon.

If you absolutely MUST have a mini SUV, then I'd also recommend the Honda. It's the best mix of reliability/build quality/safety/fuel economy for the price you pay.

b) The eternal Diesel vs Petrol Debate.
it boils down to the following:
Does the premium you'll pay on a diesel model warrant the savings you'll see at the pumps?

The short answer: NO

You'll never make the difference in fuel savings... mathematical fact, not to mention the shorter service intervals on diesel cars.

However... it doesn't take into account the fact that you ache every time you swipe your petrol card. There's a level of satisfaction you get from doing over 800kms to 65litres of fuel... that only a diesel can provide.
You might not make the money back over the lifespan of your car, but you just can't beat that feeling of making it down to Durbs from Jo'burg with a quarter of a tank still to go.

So... to sum it up:
If you're a bean counter: Diesels are more expensive up front and will cost you more in maintenance in the long run.
If you are a fuel economy nut who likes some low down torque: Diesels are the way forward.

get a Jeep Cherokee, go diesel becuase the 3.7 is a guzzler. i have a jeep wrangler and i picked it up at a very good price. the resale value of Jeeps sucks so you can get more car for your money... for R150k a very decent Jeep Cherokee:D

Stay away from Jeep. (or any American car)

I had a Grand Cherokee 4.7 and the thing just fell apart over the years. In the end, the engine "blew" up and sold the damn thing. Never again!!!

I drive a Nissan micra, best car I have ever owned, my father drove his maxima over 350 000 km and it never broke down.

Hondas are nice cars but I have a few friends that have spent a lot of money fixing them, under a year old. Get a Toyota if you want to get Hijacked.

Why ask for advice if you don't have the courtesy to respond in the thread you started?
