Would you give up your current car/bike if you were offered a self-driving car or an automated passenger drone (like the EHang 184)?

For moment no. There's still pleasure in driving.

Now if you were offered a self driving car in addition to your normal car, that would great.

Make the self driving car be the one you use to get to and from work, and keep a nice sports car for the weekend.

Agreed, own car for w/e ( single family car ) and communal during the week would be great.

Except for the morning traffic into Sandton, I wouldn't. Then again, with some of the kamikaze pilots on the road at the mo, self driving would be an accident waiting to happen. My answer is 'no'. I have better odds of getting to my destination with my car in tact, 'cos there is no algorithm powerful enough to predict the spur-of-the-moment, erratic eejits I encounter most days.

For a self driving vehicle, a resounding YES (I was watching the self driving vehicle episode of Bull last night and thinking "if only").

... a drone - forget it. Don't fancy hitting the ground at terminal velocity.

As much as I love my little car, I would toss it on the scrapheap if I could get a car that could drive itself.

Driving is a waste of time. Instead of the 30 minute commute I have to do, I could catch 30 minutes of reading time.

Sure.
Possibly only due to the value of it in comparison.
Would prefer to have one of each.

Oh yes! I would spend the time doing entering all your competitions and completing your surveys I never seem to get the time to do.

NO! Just NO!

I am in charge of mechanical devices not the other way around. If you want to get around when someone is driving, use a train, underground or a bus service.

Yes, and then I would buy a car for weekends/whenever I feel like driving.

Nope. I prefer being in control. Also, most of the self driving cars seems to be very light and small. I like something heavier, to keep physics on my side.

On the other hand, one of these I may take if I can disable the autonomous mode at will.

No, I like driving, then there is also the morality problem.
Would you get into a airplane that is completely autonomous

I voted yes, under the assumption that EVERYONE would be in driverless cars. So we would have perfect road use, optimization and inter-vehicle communication that would result in 0 accidents.

If its a mix of drivers + driverless cars I'm a bit skeptical about that. Because humans are inherently accident prone...

Ideally we need a world where certain things (flying a plane, driving a car) are handed over to a central, very big, very intelligent machine entity that can ensure it also flows smoothly, safely and without any problems. It would alleviated a lot of our stress. But you cant have it mixed, either the computer controls it all, or not.

And could totally kill us all if hacked or gained sentience.

Never.

I think people are becoming more and more lazy. I can't even think of driving a car with steering assist. There's so much enjoyment in driving a car that I just don't see myself giving it up. And I don't drive a high tech car.

This world is going to turn into a spaceship scene from Wall-E.

My head says yes...but I enjoy driving a lot. Tough one. :(
