You did try and he is still the same. So now you know, forget about him and in this you also forgive him and move on. He isn't worth more pain and heart ache.

I was about to suggest telling him to make it a telephonic apology. That way you can put the phone down when you want. And don't tell him ANYTHING personal or new about yourself.

And if you feel like forgiving, break contact afterwards and make it clear that you want no contact in the future. People seeking forgiveness generally want something from you. Deny them that. Give them only what they pretend to want.
