I mostly hang in the MyWireles forum. But as I've given up on that and ordered ADSL I've been lurking here to get up to speed on ADSL.

Am I correct in understanding that local bandwith use is offset against the 3 GB *******INTERNATIONAL********* cap?

I assumed you could abuse local bandwidth at will throughout the month and just ration your international bandwidth carefully?

Now it seems that raping local bandwidth will just chew up your "international" bandwidth allocation?

How messed up is that? Man ... I had to read some posts 3X in order to check that was in fact the case. Couldn't believe it ... at first.

Can someone confirm the situation for me?

Damn what an evil way to stop users from utlising their international bandwidth AND local bandwidth (which is dirt cheap).

[:(!] <- Grrrr ... guess ADSL will have to tide me over until iburst!

To confirm ALL outgoing and incomming bandwidth counts towards the cap.

This includes:

1) All local bandwidth
2) All international bandwidth
3) All virii/port scan attacks ...

EVERYTHING... There is a rumour doing the rounds that Telkom may change it's policy and ONLY count international traffic. This would be nice but I'm not holding thumbs just yet.

oh and it is incoming(download) and out going(uploads) ie about 20 days of basically...browsing. stick with sentech, they are more likely to come right before ADSL does, seriously!

... or you could get the best of both worlds. Get ADSL and rape one of Sentech's free proxies http://poopband.co.za/modules/news/index.php?storytopic=3. Bwaahahaha!

Seriously, both local and international counts towards the cap, both up and down. When you reach the cap, local is not throttled. In Telkom's recent correspondence with rpm they alluded to making changes in their system to differentiate between local and international traffic. No time-line given.

My word Telkom have done some evil things in the past, but have local and international count towards an international cap?

Good god ... that goes way beyond the pale!

Also noted, when you reach your CAP, local speeds are faster???

Welcome to the wonderful world of Telkom, where nothing makes sense.

I tend to agree with Pr13sT, I think Sentech will come right long before Telkom. At least Sentech is trying to do the right thing. For Telkom to drop daylight robbery from their business policy will take a long, long time.

Yeah, at least the 'fat cats' of Sentech have signed up and are willing to improve the service unlike Telkomm[}:)]

Who are the faceless people who give the bigger fat cats money for doing nothing.... oh sorry making charges go up. How hard is that with a monoply

Oh make no mistake. Sentech suck just as much as Telkom. In fact, you'll probably find they suck more, since they are still state owned. So, their profits go to our dear government, who pocket the cash and still expect us to pay taxes.

I agree, but then you start getting poll results like the one on MyADSL's frontpage... Most people seem content. huh???

Cheers

That's probably because most people are content. I didn't pick content, I went with the ecstatic option. I should note that I live in Bloemfontein, where ADSL up-take has generally been lower than elsewhere in the country, and where our exchange-to-population ratio is very good, meaning we have very little bottlenecks at the DSLAMs, as can be expected in more densely populated areas. Still, the kind of speed I have been able to get out of the line has consistently lived up to my expectations of the service.

I don't really mind the cap that much, while for some people, who have just slightly more than average usage, it becomes a big problem, I've never hit the cap myself, because I seem to be able to manage to keep my usage within 3GB per month, even with my sister, parents and a next door neighbour (illegal wireless connection) sharing the line. The cap does help to keep the excessive users at bay. The other option is the absolutely horrific service currently being offered by Sentech at a higher price, because some of their users manage to pull 90GB per month, completely exhausting the resources of their own, bottlenecked network.

Seriously, why do you need to download 90GB of data each month, where do you find the hard drive space to store it all? I don't support the low 3GB cap, 9GB or 15GB might have been better, but I do support a cap of some kind, and I am not afraid to say it either. I'd much rather have the possibility of being capped, than being in the same boat as Sentech's frustrated customer base.

To be perfectly honest, if I had to choose between my ADSL connection, which costs R950 per month, gives me 512kbps of downstream bandwidth, but has a 3GB cap, or my previous connection, a single pair analogue leased line, which cost R1200 per month, had no cap, but also offered me only 33.6kbps of downstream bandwidth and was down at least two or three days out of each month, I'd still take the limited bandwidth and terrible Telkom service on ADSL any day, because the speed is exactly what they promised, and it hasn't had one minute of down time since I got it.

I accept the argument from those users who like to indulge in P2P trading that port prioritisation means the speed of P2P applications suffers, but having worked at a small local ISP in the past, I can assure you all that P2P applications have a magical power that seems to allow them to suck an entire network dry, to flat-line point, unless they are kept in check. I have always believed that the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few. I would think it very unfair if Telkom were to allow a small group of P2P users to suck up all the bandwidth, leaving the network completely useless for web surfing, or anything else.

Please don't get my wrong. I don't support Telkom's bad customer service and unbelievably high pricing, but all things considered, I am very happy with my ADSL connection, even though it isn't perfect, it does what they said it would do, and I don't expect anything more from it.
