I can stay connected for hours now, where as before i was only able to stay connected for about 30mins at the max. Also the GPRS speed have just suddenly improved. ...still waiting for VC to put up there new 3G tower as the last one was hit by lightning......

Glad to hear things are going better.

The local banana boys are scrathing their heads on the tower struck by lightning bit, they say they don't know about it

Which tower was this and where did you get the info on lightning?

Thanks!

Well my connection is still ok but much better then it was before. i have noticed it slows down and doesn't work every now and again. Ok about 2 months ago i saw the tower get hit by lightning. before they build the complex across the road form my house i could see the tower (i can just see the red lights on-top now, from where i am sitting). it was hit and no signal for about 1 day then i saw Cell C come fix there equipment. and VC also came and fixed there 2G ever since that i have only had 2G. where i use to have HSDPA (with full signal). but the funny thing is that if you are close to the tower like 500 meters away you get 3G (i also noticed my area is no longer listed on the VC data map as covered by 3G, it use to be). So i donno i guess they are gonna fix it? V3G? The base station name is "vryheid high" in vryheid northern natal. on the high school rugby feild. Plz excuss spelling i am very tired.

From the local guys:

There are 3 sites equipped with 3G in Vryheid including Vryheid High. The sites which came live last year are the one in the business centre of Vryheid and the one in the Industrial area on the Louwsburg Road. The site at Vryheid High has been equipped with 3G and is ready to be brought live as soon as our beloved Telco come to the party with the links for this site. I presume that the time CC3G had no signal after it was hit by lightning was actually the time while the site was off for 2 or 3 days while the 3G was equipped on OUR site. We are hoping it will happen soon.....

V3G PLZ PLZ can you get the local guys to put some presure on Telkom to get the other two base stations lines in, so i can get 3G. Because i mean the 3G equipment is up already and is not in use it's just stitting there getting old & out dated. Also GPRS is soooooooo slow can't stand it anymore! I ask again plz try your best

When will VC learn the lesson and start to self provide?

Oops - forgot BB ruled that Kleinboet shall use BB's facilities

Funny things is - it seems as if Kleinboet is worth more than BB

Interesting to bring this up. Just the other day the excuse was that of right-of-way and land ownership. Yet they are waiting for Telkom to install the link so this is clearly a non issue. This would be a perfect opportunity to install the link themselves. It's just proudly being too lame arsed to do anything.

@v3g, could you find out for us, if Vodacom considered|investigated installing the link(s) itself before deciding to wait on Telkodemonopolies to install the link(s)?, and if so, what were the specific reasons for opting for Telkodemonopolies umbilical linkages at this particular site?

Maybe VC has a long term contract with Telkom e.g. Telkom gives them "low" prices, in exchange VC may ONLY use Telkom.

Nothing complex in how these decisions are made. You look at who can provide what service in which time frame at what cost and then pick the best option.

Often it's still quicker to wait for Telkom than to build a specific link, other times you don't need the larger capacity of a (expensive) microwave tower just to connect one tower, etc.

So, it's basic Economics 101.

Right-of-way is an issue where you have to lay fiber, etc. Remember, Telkom have been building their network for a long time, it's not a quick process to build a new one. Even the SNO uses existing infrastructure.

Lastly, Vodacom is in an interesting position where there are two (equally) Big Brothers. This seems to work in our favour......
