Write DivX to DVD?

Do I need to use a specific program or setting to do this?
I am not trying to convert the files to DVD format. Just want to copy 3 or 4 movies(Divx or Avi) on to one disc and view it in DVD player.

I have a new LG DVD Recorder capable of playing DivX/XviD movies.
It plays perfectly when I copy the movie from the PC to my USB stick and play it from there.
But whenever I write these movies to a DVD(using DVD-R) my player gives me this error:
"Unknown disc. Please check disc"
**It works perfectly when I put the DVD in both laptops.

I wrote the DVD as a normal data disc.

First when I wrote the files to DVD Windows gave me an error about the DVD writer's speed being to slow/fast for the disc. The disc was 16x and I wrote at 8x. After the error I wrote at 6x. But I cannot see why this would be a problem?

Any advice on what I did wrong? Because I am pretty sure this is possible.

Use a DVD +R. That might be your problem.

I have to be honest and say I have no idea what the difference is.
Although it does show on the box and manual of the recorder that it supports all type of DVD's. -R, +R, +RW etc....

Use Nero Express.
Burn as data dvd
Before burning, select speed (8x in your case) and then there should be another checkbox just below that, that will ask is you want to "Increase compatibility with MPEG4 files...etc" - tick this box.

Also ensure that you finalise the dvd. ie. do not select the "multisession" option.

This works for me on + and - dvds.

I quickly went to the neighbor and his el-cheapo DVD player reads and plays the disc with no problems at all.
PS. Nothing wrong with my LG DVD player. It plays all 20 of my original DVD's and also plays audio CD's and picture CD's/DVD's without problems.
Went to buy a DVD+R too. Gonna test that now and see if it works.
Thanks Moggie, will try your settings now.

What make of DVD-R are you using to burn your DivX files on? What model LG do you have?
It should read it fine when they are burnt as a data disc - just drag the DivX files to Nero express and burn.
If you use cheap DVD's that may be your problem. I've always used Verbatim, Panasonic or Sony discs and my LG plays everything so far.

No man, cheapo DVDs play everything! Its the expensive ones that you always have a problem with. I always advise people to buy the el-cheapo one for that reason.

Exactly - cheapo ones dont include additional software to ban the copied stuff lol. My uncle is in the same boat - purchased foreign DVD's and can't play them in his 1 grand DVD player (incidentally LG as well). Fortunately he could use DVD Shrink to remove the region code and it played OK. The 'expert' at the shop told him it was the NTSC format that was the problem... shows how much he knew - obviously it was nothing more than the region code.

I'm talking about blank DVD's, yeah? I've bought Benq, Princo, Aim and a few other no-name brands in the past, and ended up trashing over 40% of the discs per 100-pack, as they were all cr@p quality - you could see the dye was not consistant, the surface plastic was no completely flat (undulations), there were specs in the read/write area and there were write-errors almost as soon as writing data started.

My data-write error rate with the 3 name brands I mentioned above is less than 1%.

Any blank DVD doesn't carry any additional software... I think you're referring to pre-bought movie discs, or side-walk specials (copies) ?

LOL - the store "experts" are always a laugh - can't he crack the code on his LG? Most of them have a number combo you punch in to make the player region-free.

1) I was referring to cheapo DVD players
2) The code was in and still no play - removing region code with DVD Shrink worked a treat... I still can't figure that one... except that perhaps he didn't really get the correct code for his player... I still think it's a combination of 1) copy protection on disk and 2) region code - the two working together, not just one or the other.... DVDShrink removed both and problem solved.

About disk brands, I only buy TDK from pick n pay and Sony from CNA. I have had trouble with LG, Verbatim and others (Princo are the worst I've ever used)...

Hey Apoc! How did it go?

Sorry. I totally forgot about this thread when I started watching all those movies.
Seems like the DVD+R did the trick. And I made sure to finalize the disc.

I only use Verbatim. More expensive but worth the quality.
I have the LG RH387 DVD Recorder. Very nice piece of hardware.

I find that the TDK ones are also quite good, never had a problem with them either.
