xBox 360 - should I get one?

My birthday is coming up, and I was wondering if I should put the xbox 360 on my wishlist?

I have a PS2 (which I haven't used in about 2 years).
I have a PSP, which I use almost every day.

The reason for the PSP preference is basically that I can play it anywhere, and don't need a TV or screen to use it.

Now, our little one is turning 2 in November, so he is at that stage where he wants to push buttons, figure out how to do things for himself. Will it be worth it for me to get the xbox, so that he can play with, or will it remain in the cupboard like the PS2?

Thanks guys/gals

Got my xbox360 last week and even though I dont really like consoles my brother got a ps2 and I played once or twice on it but I really like the xbox360. You can connect it via ethernet and play music and movies from ur computer on the xbox if u got xp sp 2 or windows mce. And then theres also xbox live so u can download some cool stuff :D

And the graphics and sound in games are really awesome.
and just to mention if u get an xbox try and get urself burnout revenge its Legendary :D :p

I always say you should get a Xbox, but if you are planning on your 2 year old playing... Rather not..

There are currently only 2 kids games on the Xbox and neither are playable for a 2 year old.

They are bringing out Guitar Hero for the Xbox though and then the 2 year old could have some fun.....

LOL @ bboy

@Gavin: Yeah, I expected as much ... but he doesn't necessarily have to actually get anything right. Pushing buttons and seeing things change on the screen, he will be like "OE OE OE" :D Any motorcycle games available (he loves bikes, and cars actually)?

I disagree, there may not be many retail games appropriate for a kid, but the stuff on Live Arcade certainly qualifies, and it's relatively cheap. You may also find others in your household getting hooked on the arcade stuff-my wife plays Hexic and Doom every chance she gets :)

Hmm Doom for a 2 year old.... You don't have kids do you?

I don't think any console has games for a 2 year old... Seriously it's not their target market.

I wasn't implying it would be appropriate for a 2 year old, rather for other members of the household. Landy mentioned that his son just enjoyed the changing shapes and colours in response to his input, a couple of the simpler games on the arcade fit that bill (and you don't even have to pay for them unless you want to unlock extended functionality). But no, the Xbox isn't exactly a sensible purchase for the sake of a 2 year old.

As for no systems appropriate for a 2 year old-I wouldn't quite agree there. There are a number of super-budget educational kiddie titles for the PS2 that come in at around R100. Musica used to stock them, but I havent seen them in a while.

Yeah the PS2 had some, but as I said 'no consoles has games for a 2 year old', the PS2 isn't a console it's a paper weight :D...

But Landy, I still think getting the box is a very good idea... Fantastic machine, and your son can watch Barney DVD's on it :p

ROFL @ "Barney DVDs" .. those things are so irritating, it is not even funny, but hey, the kids love them.

Of course the damn xbox is for me! What were you guys thinking? :D
I just don't want it to sit in the cupboard like the PS2, so if I don't use it, the little one can bash the controls around to see what happens

Hmm, if you've got ADSL and like playing online against real peeps then the 360 is a great choice, but if you're generally not into gaming anymore then maybe not.

If portable gaming is your preference then go get yourself a nintendo DS lite, it's a lot cheaper than a 360 and you won't regret it.

Alternatively, if it's a family console you still want, maybe you can wait till December for the Wii, which should throw everything on it's head.

You know what's worse than Barney... Little Einstein... Man that DVD is going to suffer a horrible fate if the kids don't stop with it...

Wait even worse... Mr Men and Little Miss......... **** it hsa the worst soundtrack ever...
