I've now factory reset the phone, activated developers options and disabled the memory optimization - nada, still no sms's. The phone also seems to be unable to reboot / restart after shut down - have to do a battery pull for it to restart.

That is the newest the device not powering off without a battery pull is very strange I suggest sending it back asap.

I was also thinking that this might be hardware. Hopefully they can replace it with a better one.

S5 would still kick ass I rate. The Note 2 would be more in line with the S4 spec-wise. The Note 3 I'm not too sure about

Would rate pretty well, as ive had an S5 before. The Redmi is a pretty solid device imo considering the price you paying for it.

Note 2 or 2 Pro, cause the 2 pro is an entry level phone and won't compare to the Mi4i.

Regarding the Samsung S5 vs the Redmi Note 2, the Note 2 actually seems to be about the same in benchmarks maybe a bit better, considering the S5 wasn't really a massive step up from the S4. The big difference is the faster cpu and the better camera.

I know, I just don't want to spend the money on a Redmi Note. R2000 was as much as I was willing to pay.

Incidentally, if anyone comes across a Mi4i, please let me know. More than likely stolen. I've had Vodacom blacklist it, so it shouldn't work anyway.

Newer models will likely be priced double of current models.

Look at the price difference between the Mi4 and Mi5.
