The nearest China Mall is quite far from me. I got the substitute cover from a small Chinese run clothing store that also sells phone accessories. The shop owner was kind enough to let me try out the various covers. The Galaxy A7 cover fitted too tightly and there wasn't enough room to work the power button. Not bad for R40 though.

The battery of my dad's Zest T1 finally stopped working and he's looking for a new phone. Budget is up to R3000, but would like to spend as little as possible. He asked me to help him find a good budget phone that will last a few years and seeing that the Xiaomi phones seem to offer excellent value for money, what would you guys recommend? I'm still using my first gen Moto G and haven't really followed the latest developments, but I read in some international forums that the redmi note 2 has some battery issues. Have those been addressed since launch or is it still an issue? Is there something else he should look out for when deciding on a Xiaomi?

Which of the Xiomis would you recommend and what would be a good alternative in that price range? If he does stretch his budget to R4000, should he look at the Mii 4 and would would be a good phone in that bracket?

The Mi 4 is quite good but it's a bit underpowered by nowadays standards. Maybe look at getting him a Moto G (3rd generation) if possible from the Orange Store as those ones are really good value for money and should fit into your original budget very well.

There's a couple different versions of the mi4, are you talking about the snapdragon 601?

Orange only has the 8GB Moto G 3rd Gen, which is horrible... 1GB RAM makes it a complete waste of time.

Redmi 2 for R1899 is a much better device. Just add a cover and screen protector.

Xiaomi is so confusing with all their model variations, I'm trying to source a mi4 LTE version.

I don't think we have the LTE Mi 4 variant in South Africa unless you import it. But after all the customs and duty tax, the savings aren't as much.

I just want it for its ability to run Android and Windows 10 Mobile, otherwise I might as well get the P9 Lite since there is local support from Huawei.

Oh wow, I didn't realise they took away the 2GB RAM model. That sucks. I agree with you , the Redmi Note 2 or Pro models are much better now.

The Redmi Note 2 does have dual sim and LTE. The battery lasts 1 and half days with medium to light usage. I'm on 60 percent now and my last charge was at 9am.

Any word on the Note 3?

I held up investing in the Note 2 but now that the Mi5 is so overpriced, I'm dreading the release of the 3.

I think its better just to go for broke and get the Note2?

I suspect a special is around the corner. Makro had the Mi4 for R3.5k not so long ago.

Seeing the current price for the Note 2 is about R3K I don't think it'll be more than R3.5-4K or within that price range.

If anyone from MIA is watching this thread PLEASE BRING THE GOOGLE MI BOX when it becomes available.
Would be so incredible to go into a normal chain store and just buy a nexus-like product for a change.

I did see it on geekbuying a while back. I would get the scale also, the miband and scale will tie in nice with the app, as it supports both.
