Planning on getting the Redmi 2 Pro and handing down my Lumia 1320 to my dad. He has only had Nokia's since the first baksteen was released and he is pretty brand loyal :)

1320 is decent model . I am sure he will be happy to have it.

He has had Nokia all his life so I am sure he will appreciate it. It's not a bad phone at all, I am really enjoying it but the fact that it is a 6" device makes it a bit difficult to handle in some situations. Back to Android I go...

I would like to get the Mi 5. How hackable is this thing. Ideally, I would like to unlock the boot loader and flash another ROM.

I've heard the bootloaders are unlocked from factory. Not sure how true this is so YMMV

Theres some stuff to consider, one of the issues being Xiaomi's reluctance to release kernel sources.

I see that there is Cyanogenmod for the Mi4 but not many other devices...

It also depends on whether a good dev gets his hands on one and sticks with it for support.

just my 2c

Xda is your best bet mate

R7999 from here http://mia.africa.com/za/ - Note that this is not the Pro version... so 3GB RAM and 32GB storage... NON-expandable.

Maybe there will be launch specials... lets hope

That being said... at the launch the price was given at around USD260 for the same model...

There's math to do

whats the best way to do this?

Dunno. It's your job to look into it.

If you find a well priced store but it doesn't ship to SA, you can use a mail forwarding service. I use MyUS where necessary.

As for import costs:
- Charger value is exempt from duties.
- Courier fees not included.
- Duty will be 14% of the remaining declared value.
- VAT will be calculated on 110% of that remaining value plus the import duty.
- 3 day courier typically costs $40-60 incl insurance.
- Disbursement fee from courier to handle customs for you is usually R150-250.
- I recommend DHL Express.

No import duty on phones if i'm not mistaken so just 14% of 110% plus handling fees.
I must say that 110% of value thing smacks of pure extortion.
