It's a pity what happened to Huawei. I like their phones. But their prices have gotten stupid and with no GMS, I cannot justify it's purchase - even if it was sold a bit cheaper.

Xiaomi is a great midrange(mostly) brand though with good bang for buck specs in comparison to the big boys with full GMS - similar to what Huawei once was.

hell, all I want is unlockable bootloaders, they make stellar hardware but it's utterly useless to me if I can't install what I want on their devices, plus it would incentivize them slightly to unofficially let people install GMS themselves if they wish to, but whatever.

They've come a long way from using fake parts etc. Looking at my Redmi Note 2 with a fake Samsung camera.

LOL sweet revenge for when my 3GS started getting the 'No Signal' error right after I installed an official Apple update 2 weeks out of warranty , and Apple just went.. meh.
Walled garden environment my ass, if something goes wrong with their software on their phone you could just as well be on your own in the Kalahari.
I switched myself & 2 kids away from Apple right after that, first Galaxy 2's and then onto prepaid & Xiaomi's, I have 4 peeps in my family on their 3rd & 4th Xiaomi's now.
And so cheap too, my 128GB Note 8 cost R4000 6 months ago, peanuts. Apple and the sheep can go eat a Richard for all I care.

I have a note 5a and a redmi 8 both were good deals for the price. I do tend to drop the standard ROMs though and use custom ones. Using a GSI ROM on the 8 as there are no full ROM's for it. I'll stick with the note's with snapdragon CPU's in future as they are better supported on ROM sites. Still R2600 for a phone with OK specs a cover and screen protector is a steal.

In other news, Toyota is selling more vehicles than Maybach.
Not really the same, Apple used to sell more phones than everyone else, it's just that Apple has realized that upgrades are getting slower so they released more expensive phones, and as usual, people buy them as a status symbol.
Apple is going into the direction of SaaS, and most of their revenue/profit growth is going to come from that direction as there are only so many iPhones that you can sell.

Xiaomi does so well because they have a rule of 5% profit from a phone, so margins are small, which is great in getting people to buy into your ecosystem, they make their cash from all the services around it.

You'll probably start seeing Apple do the same in a couple of years, bringing the pricing of their phones to the upper mid range probably, low enough that most middle class and up can afford it, those most likely to consume your premium services, while still being high enough that it's still consider a "premium" thing based on their marketing.

It’s a fair comparison. Xiaomi make cheap phones to sell en masse. Apple don’t. Even their cheap phones are more expensive than many people want to spend.

Cheaper items just about always sell more, even if they’re inferior. It would be interesting to see how many high end, or price matched phones xiaomi has sold vs Apple
