I'm not saying it won't work but some TVs can only send 2.0 audio over optical from HDMI sources, they only do 5.1 from say the built in media player from files on your USB drive. If you plug it in directly from the Mi Box to the AVR you will get 5.1 audio.

If you already have an optical cable you can just buy the adapter:

I'm sure you can find the right cable without getting a normal optical cable plus adaptor at places like Dion Wired or some place that specialises in audio equipment.

Otherwise you will just have to buy one online, maybe Takealot has then you can collect at the warehouse.

Hi I already have a standard optical cable and yes there is one for the s box on Takealot but I can not find a place for just the adaptor - thanks

I don't know why the cable on Takealot is so expensive, the adaptor is R35 at Loot, I don't know if it still works but if you use the Loot app and enter code "freed" it should give you free delivery.

Iirc it's orders over R35 so it might not work,so you might have to add something else cheap or just get the right cable from them for R72 and use the code then.

Hi - after reading 185 pages of posts I am confussed - is the Xiaomi Mi box S a goog buy and on balance does it perform well ?
I'm still having lots of issues getting my S to connect via WiFi. I'm ordering a USB to ethernet adapter, but in the meantime, it really is battling to connect and stay connected.

No problems here except for the bloody sleep issue (where it's slow when it is turned on after sleeping)

Wifi is still way more stable on 5Ghz than on 2.4Ghz, and with redoing the whole network in my house, 5Ghz is patchy where the Mi Box is, so I opted for this last week:

Yeah. That's what I ended up having to do to get the non-S one to work. Looks as if it will be the case for this one as well.

Hi,

My Mi Box 3 isn't happy playing movies.
I tried setting the video from Auto to 1080p but it still takes about 2 minutes to load a movie, then stutters like hell.
Tried 2.4G and 5G wifi, do I need to get an ethernet adapter or is there something else I can filddle with?

What app are you using to play the movies?

Loaded analiti over the weekend and I must say its quite rad :)
Also tried it last night ... got the shock of my life, as it reckons me I have no internet, yet I can watch Youtube, etc.
Replaced the network cable on the Mi Box, shot to full speed :)
