Bought mine from Takealot for R5 300, ordered Sunday, arrived Tuesday .

Takealot pused the price up, don't pay more than R5 300

Another trusted link I have used for all my other Xiaomi Phones, buy from here if cheaper than Takealot (1 week delivery):

What's in the box:
Redmi Note 9S, Power adapter, USB C type cable, SIM eject tool ,
Plastic Cover,
Glass Protector,
Factory applied plastic protector on phone.

Some photos with and without the cover taken with my Redmi Note 4 (sorry for all the fluff).

First impression (Day 2 & Day 3):

Took it off charge at 7am, and hit the road towards Durban.
4G Mobile Data.
Display brightness 80%-100%.

Used Google Maps all the way there and back for time estimates, screen on only near and around Umhlanga.
Took photos.
Had a directors meeting over Teams.
Browsed the interwebs and stuff.

After 12 hours about 35% battery left.

Detailed usage here:

Speed
Coming from the Note 4 of course much much faster. It has no issues opening and rendering big Architectural PDF's (My Redmi Note 4 couldn't open it of course).
No app crashes and slowness switching between Airtable, Notion, OneDrive, Teams, Skype, Chrome......
I don't really play games but will install Room or something later on when I have time.

Speed wise it is really awesome and smooth. I did make the transition animations scale faster in Android Developer settings. Still need to test a couple of architectural and office applications so might update later.

Launcher and MIUI 11 (for now, 12 coming soon hopefully):
MIUI 11 works great. Just missing an app tray.

I installed Nova Launcher. It works except for when it doesn't work. Sometimes all the icons just disappear and only comes back when I relaunch the launcher.... yap. I'll reinstall and update later.

Adware, Promotion and Xiaomi Applications:
Generally I love the Xiaomi applications as they work well. The first thing I do with every Xiaomi is go into each app and settings and switch off "Suggestions". This remove all adverts.
Also uninstall all games and apps I don't use.

After that everything works great without interruptions.

Full Screen Display Mode:
You can hide the system navigation buttons by going to advanced setting, full screen display.
It doesn't always work so well as you need to swipe up from the bottom of the display to return home etc.
In some application this doesn't register and instead respond to the application swipes, which means you can exit the app or return home. This was just my experience. Full screen display doesn't work so great, but when it does, it is nice not to have the navigation buttons for that extra screen space.

Size:
Size is perfect and very comfortable. It works great because the phone is not very wide. The length is REALLY awesome to view files and PDF's and in general surfing the web. Going back to my Note 4 just feels so... wrong.
If you have tiny fingers, there is and option for tiny finger people to help you use your tiny hands. It's called one-handed mode. Meh.

Camera
For the price it is not bad. I don't think it replaces a point and shoot camera, but still great to capture memories. The macro camera is a nice to play with as I always enjoyed taking really closed up photos of bugs and stuff.
Macro photos were mostly taken at night, so lighting a bit messed up and casting shadows.

Standard Output (12MP):

Wide:

Do you guys remove the sticker on the back of the phone that says do not remove?

Is it fine if I remove it and stick it on the box?

I was under the impression there is now an app tray. I own a different xiaomi but I'd swear it was available as an update and to everyone. Anyways sounds like quite a decent phone. Congratulation on the new toy.

Some versions seems to have it, others not. Global one of those that don't have it. Why the stupidity no idea. Probably because Apple or Samsung have copyrights to it in the 'global' market.

Very strange indeed. I have it on my end and using global variant of phone. I think the omission is due to something else and not necessarily Google or apple or Samsung.

But yes with regards to things like call recording - that I blame on Google. The MIUI versions of dialer had that feature. Xiaomi decided to go with Google in terms of the dialer and that led to the lack of call recording. Google is rumoured to implement it sometime down the line but I'm certain regions only.

Seems similar MIUI global 11.0.3.0. And Android version is similar too - v10 QKQ1.

I knew I wasn't high ...

Have you checked settings to enable the feature? View attachment 872237

How do these compare to the P30 Lite 2020 edition or the P40 Lite?

Yep. After a couple of years when the updates are dead then it's time to play around with different roms.

I really liked poco launcher on my MI9, but now use lawnchair for google news instead of app vault of left most screen.
