Hey Guys, wondering if any one has an idea of the requirements for a road legal bike and what the procedure is to get one on the road? I am looking into buying one of these; http://johannesburg.olx.co.za/2005-yamaha-wr250f-for-r23000-iid-764137516

And basically turning it into a road legal commuter for riding around town by adding road tires and what ever else is neccessary. These bikes built up as motards seem to be quite popular around the world and it looks like a lot of fun. They dont look too bad either ! IMG_1899.jpg

There is a road legal version the WR250x but i cant seem to find much, and the price of an off road one is just right to buy and put some extra cash into it as a sort of project bike.

Any thoughts, suggestions ?

You need an electrical harness. So that will sort, indicators, head light and rear light. Then you need a brake light switch for the back brake and one for the front brake.

And with that you think it will get through road worthy test ? There are so many parts and spares available online for these things its ridiculous ... Cant imagine all that would cost too much

That is the only difference between an Off-road and an On-road bike.

O and it needs a frame (VIN) number too. Some off-roads only have an engine number. You will have to have the engine number stamped to the frame. But I have no idea through which channels that is done.

Edit: Doubt the newer bikes will have the VIN number issue though due to insurance requirements.

Btw, why not just buy a DR400 and put on Road tyres and rims?

Thanks for the info. The VIN number on the chassis makes sense, its going to be a long mission to try get that and all the paperwork done...

All offroad bikes MX or Enduro come with a frame number, this is part of the import law, Bikes actually had the full VIN number before most cars had them as they changed yearly and there was a need to identify models. Only old vintage stuff were serialised with numericals.

All enduro spec offroads come with wiring harness so the WR will be fine, if you can get the Euro spec you will get all you need except the add on dim/bright, indicators and brake switch but these are easily obtainable.

In Europe all enduro competition bikes need to be roadworthy so they are manufactured with this in mind, USA spec are often closed circuit so similar to MX bikes so that will be a headache.

Go WR or if KTM the EXE/EXC is the Euro models and you will find tons of road legal stuff on the offroad forums like Moto101
