Year End Functions

Another debate, this one promises to be very interesting.

I, for one, avoid going to Year End Functions. I have last been to one, somewhere in 2010, and that was because I was going to be given something. Other than that, I avoid it at all costs. As for the reasons why, primarily due to bad experiences of employees going mad (getting punch drunk) and bosses being total turds on the day.

One shining example of a year-end function for me, was for all of us to go to the Action Sports Centre in Alberton, and go and run around like mad things doing all those ****ty things, followed by a pub lunch. And this went on, with the boss shouting insults and people and being a turd. Some year end function that was.

In the past, I have also not gotten food because the line workers go mad and eat all the food before you can get to it. (They get to go first because after all they build the products). That day, I was so disgusted I basically just got up and left, got to my car and met my wife at Maxis and ate there. I wasn't missed anyhow (by then company was planning to get rid of me anyway) Their previous year-end function to that one, was to take the staff to Carnivore, needless to say, you get up from your seat, the workers then take your seat, and whatever you happened to leave at the table. After these two incidents, at that company I told them I would not be attending any further year-end functions and I never did. While they went mad in the beer tent at the year end function just before I resigned, I was sitting working. Was supposed to get a Pick n Pay voucher that year, I am still waiting for it.

Previous job I had, they at least catered for this, you needed to RSVP for the year-end function. Needless to say I didn't want to have to see f**k-face after hours too, so I threw the invites into the shredder. What was really funny was, I had long since resigned, and their year end function and my wife's year end function were at the same venue, and I was invited to go with my wife, so I went, and had the most awesome fun pouring salt into their wine and tomato sauce on their chairs.

My current job, I told them in the interview, NO YEAR END FUNCTIONS, and they were fine with that. In any case, its great because my office is some km away from the head office so they cannot really make me go, I always make sure I have lots of work to do on the day for those nosy employees who want to ask silly questions. This year's one is on the 13th of December. I am busy booking leave for that date.

Jeez dude, you got really bad luck with your year end functions.

My ones i've been to have all be radical. We went to the horse racing for one and had a nice dinner, we did an advanced driving course along with a nice buffet lunch for another. The last one i went too was a oriental theme so everyone dress up in oriental outfits and we chowed some chinese food, sat around chatted and laughed.

I haven't mentioned the good ones though. Prior to working for these companies, I had pretty awesome ones, the last awesome one was 2001... I then went to work for a company that doesn't do year end functions, then to the one where the staff go bos.

2001.. pretty good
2002...2003 no year end functions.
2004: Crap one at Carnivore
2005: no year end function (boss was angry with staff)
2006: Gold Reef City (the one I waked out of)
2007: Beer tent in parking lot (I stayed away)
2008: Got given something (was nothing to write home about, was friggen hot)
2009: Was off sick on the day (pneumonia)
2010: Was forced to go to the crappy Alberton Action Sports Centre
2011: At new job, didn't RSVP
2012: Had resigned, went with my wife to hers
2013: On leave, to avoid it.

You are a special one Koosi.

All the year end functions I've had have been very nice. This year's function is a top venue, but I won't be able to go as it's just too much on an evening to stay in CPT and then figure out how to get home. Some of the families who also won't be able to do it are having a Kirstenbosch saturday daytime get together which will I'll go to. Maybe you've just worked for really scummy companies?

I have attended more than I have avoided, but they are all CRAP. Thankfully they people are more well behaved for the most part, but I don't enjoy this type of thing as they always have to cater separately for me (now there are two vegatarians in the dept).

Free food - meh
Free booze - meh
Idjiot colleagues - meh

edit
(btw I have never asked to be catered for, just in case something thinks "those difficult vegetarians...")

Don't you love it when colleagues ask you, "Are you attending the xmas lunch?"

I always answer, "What xmas lunch? I am only aware of the year end lunch.". We have many types of people here and about 50% don't celebrate xmas.

To be honest. Spending a 6+ hours in the company of the people you normally see for 8 hours a day in a social setting?
You have some guys talking shop, the one office worker who drinks too much and does something awkward...

Worst experience ever - I was doing software development and support for a call center, and was invited to their year end at the Valley of the Waves. A group of highly temeramental call centre operators and booze, away from the office....
Lets see - a spitting argument between two of the line managers (married), the painfully awkward attempts of the three 'moms' in the call center trying to patch them up. Watching the part-time male models try to chat up Sun City dancers tanning at one pool (Not done, those girls are something else), taking one drunk girl to have a broken arm splinted while the manager tried to sort out the angry mom who'se son she almost crushed on the slides. And to top it off -when we eventually decided to leave - everyone catching the one girl in a drunken threesome in the back of the bus (with a strange couple no less). On my seat...
Next year the manager didn't even ask me if I wanted to go.

All the rest are a mix of pleasant and awkward, but that was the low point. Not even handing out invitations to a Viennese Ball themed one, while dressed as a footman could compare. Security at AECI Explosives and the SABC only allowed me in with a security escort, and the girls at FedSure thought I was a strippergram.

I've been at my current job for five years and haven't been to any function they organized. There's just not that camaraderie and team spirit.

At my previous company where I worked for longer I've been to every single function.

Some really sour Year End stories in 'ere. I've only been working for 4/5 years now and I've gone to every year end function.

But then again, I'm that extroverted gees guy; sober or drunk - I love exciting people and just generally having a good time filled with LOLs. My only bad experience was hitting on my boss and ironic enough, today we're still very good friends and she knows I have a thing for her boobs :)

I enjoy ours every year... usually just a braai at a nice scenic venue with some team building games/activities mixed in with a lot of beer.

I'm even organising it this year.

2007 - didnt go.
2008 - didnt go. I think both years, I was already on leave or something.
2009 - pretty awesome summer party and an awesome Christmas party. But that was the best company I have ever worked for, sad to say it was in the UK.
2010 - Pretty tame.
2011 - pretty tame.
2012 - was self employed at the time.
2013 - Next week. Not sure what to expect, but since they are already arranging taxis for everybody, I am expecting lots of drunkenness. And I have heard rumours of a tequila station - to me tequila is liquidized vomit mixed with vodka.

We stopped having year end functions (with the whole company together) a few years ago. Now each department has their own year end 'outing'. Being part of a small service department things are actually quite ok; even if the "year end function" is just a lunch at some restaurant. The fact that they're held during working hours also helps. :)

Last year it was 5 people, talking crap over some Indian food in Sandton. Quite enjoyable.

I'll attend the smaller team building type functions, where it's either 10 (direct team) or 30 (overall team) people, and often some kind of activity (Next one planned is a karting race day at Kyalami), but in 12 years I have yet to attend the company (200+ people) year end function. They invariably end up being booze fests. One year the company clowns even stole some of the decor from the host venue...

been to a few so far, besides me filming them getting drunk and setting tablecloths alight
( whole company attending, getting really drunk and bringing half of Tembisa with them, complete with spinning 325I's ).

also been to one for our department only, was nice went to barnyard in boksburg.

never been to one of the team building / advanced driving ones before, should be interesting if It ever comes up.

I just suppose its all due to the kind of people attending and their general behavour, also the budget involved :p

I've always enjoyed all my year end functions, maybe because in the past most of the compaines I worked for were <15 people. It was more like going out with friends

We haven't had a decent year end function in our department in 5 years, and the last one I attended wasn't even paid for by my employer. I usually make sure that I'm already on vacation when these functions are held.

A braai with free alcohol (beer) isn't my idea of a year end function. You always get those individuals who cannot and don't know how to behave.

I just skip these functions all together.

Never been to any staff function because I abhor drunkenness and the behavior of some people. After what I had seen at the mid-year braai, I will never go to the year end function.
