Yellow Broadband with no Broadband in PMB?

I noticed that the Celll Broadcast on my N70 now flashes between "Scottsville" and "Y'ello Broadband" and so I thought that Broadband had finally arrived at my workplace. Since my N70 was not making a 3G connection I assumed that this is an EDGE-only upgrade. I immediately pulled out my AC775 datacard to see if that was indeed so and alas, the card still reports GPRS?

Are they buys upgrading the site here and I happened to catch them in the act? :)

I'm connecting to the following Cell IDs:
3667B - WOODBURN
110B - PEBS

MTNDD, any help on this?

On another front does anyone know whether one can detect on the N70 whether you have a GPRS vs EDGE Connection?

Some other wireless broadband companies already have coverage in your area for a long time

I also want to know when HSDPA/3G coverage of PMB is going to turn on. Its the capital, chock a block full of politicians all with datacards, growing like mad and Vodacom has most of city covered with 3G/HSDPA. Getting booked into a B&B in an issue here most of the time.

MTN is flushing cold cash down the drain here, handing it over to the Meerkat.

It seems that you're sitting on the border of 2 different sites. The one has EDGE & the other not. When you set up a data call, the data card will select the site that is stronger & camp on it with the data service it is fitted with (EDGE or GPRS). In this case, the stronger server has GPRS most likely. Each cell has it's own unique Cell broadcast unless it supports EDGE. All EDGE sites display YEllo Broadband whilst the site displaying "Scotsville" has not yet been upgraded to EDGE.

Thanks MTNDD, that makes sense. I must have been on the border of another site that has EDGE. I must admit that it only happened once and hence why I thought that the guys were busy with the upgrade.

My question still stands as to why MTN is not focusing on extending their 3G/HSDPA in cities like PMB? VC has literally covered the entire city with 3G/HSDPA by now and MTN doesn't have one site yet. They must be raking in the $$$$ from all those civil servants that are running around with their laptops and datacards. C'mon MTN, surely you want a piece of the pie?!?

I'd hate to admit this, but the "little devil on my shoulder"'s chirps might be right for once, snakepit!

I'm also interested to see that VC is now also covering larger expanses (like the Northern Cape) with EDGE connections according to their coverage map - very clever.

MTN_DD, could you give me an idea what 3G expansion plans MTN has for PMB? I live in Chase Valley and have 80% VC signal strength with 3G/HSDPA. It's becoming more and more difficult to hold up the Yello flag - in fact I've noticed that it might even be turning a darker shade of blue already.... What a pity.....

MTNDD, I thought I'd give you more info RE my request for what MTN's plan is for PMB. Last year you posted the following.

I'd like clarity on whether these will be 3G/HSDPA upgrades or EDGE only.

Secondly you also said you would find out about Chase Valley here and I didn't get your answer. Any updated news?

Thanks MTNDD. When you say "completed" do you mean 3G/HSDPA enabled or just EDGE? I look forward to your answer on Chase Valley too. ;)

While you at it - can you check on when MTN plans to have 3G coverage for Hilton Gardens in Hilton, KZN? At the moment both VC and MTN don't have any BB coverage in that area. Cell C has a tower right off the N3 there (and therefore obviously EDGE) and I hear they're going 3G soon... At least that's what a little birdie told me.
