So whole year I've had to sort out this lab. And its working fine, users have a fileserver and a backup, DHCP server for FOG network installs. Truly amazing all the wonderful things you can do with Linux... seems you're only limited by your imagination (and googling skills :p)

But the tinkerer in me is getting restless. Time to optimise the setup.

Next up, domain controller! Had a look at this, and the setup seems easy enough.

Questions are,
1 how much work is necessary to make sure everything is running flawlessly?

2 I should be upgrading to ubuntu 12.04 for LTS; in others' experiences, does upgrading more often than not utterly mess things up (apart from re-editing relevant cfg files)?

3 My institute already has a DC running for the whole campus. The lab pcs I'm interested in do not use/need said DC, but can my prospective setup cause problems for staff who use the campus DC? I don't believe it will be a problem, but I'd rather be safe and ask.

4 Is it possible to set disk quotas for users using a DC based off samba?

My plan is to extend current file servers into PDC and BDC.
