I've bee around since Tiger, and this is really the most pathetic upgrade sequence I've ever seen from Apple. First I got stuck at "two minutes left" for hours - twice. Booting into Safe Mode finally cleared that, but now it has been "looking for applications and documents to transfer" from my Time Machine volume - for several hours.

Whatever happened to Quality Control at Apple?

Upgraded my MBP from Mavericks to Yosemite without a hitch. My MBA is (still?) running the beta - also no problems.

@OP - I take it you're doing a clean install?

@bwana: no, never needed to do that on a Mac before. This is why I left Windows. Right now my Ubuntu box wins the "most effortless upgrade" award.

@skimread: No macports, no Fink, no Homebrew, so ... No, I don't think so.

Finally got it working, in Safe Mode by ignoring the iunstructions to copy data from the TM volume. It ignored the 2 users on the disc and insisted on creating a new account. Got into the OS, deleted the excess user account. Hmm, it is not recognising my TM backup. Reboot into normal mode and ... we are reinstalling the OS again! FIND Startup Disk can't find ANY volumes. So, we have "about 22 minutes" to go (and have since the last 15 minutes).

Five minutes later: 21 minutes to go! I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Sorry mate but an isolated incident does not indicate a lack of quality control.

I've upgraded 12 MacBooks of varying ages in our offices on Friday without any drama at all.

Then why is it even looking for data on your Time Machine volume?

Ok managed to point the installer to a different, empty disk. It installed, rebooted ... And promptly ran the installer again. Time to take this machine in. It's bricked. Thanks, everybody.

WRT Mail.app - I used to be able to right click and select save as for attachments - has that disappeared for everyone?
