I signed up for service in April. Got my modem. Out of the box I'm getting 24% signal on base 110. Try to connect... "Remote computer did not respond..". Sentech says I am too far away to transmit back.

After a day of discovery, I found base 126 on the far side of my patio using a patch antenna. However, over the next few weeks it would take me about an hour to get the modem to connect to 126 and not 110 (which was much stronger), everytime I came home to use it.

Then my computer kept freezing up all the time. Especially when downloading. After hours on the phone with Sentech, found out that their drivers are not compatible with Hyper Threading (P4 processors). So my expensive PC now runs like a Celeron with Hyper Threading disabled.

Then I started getting "remote computer did not respond" on 126. I went the whole month of May.. one day down, the next up, the next down. I kept telling Sentech support that my modem was bad and giving errors. They kept telling me it was my computer. After almost of month of this, they told me to take my modem to Sandton where it would be tested and replaced if necessary. After driving to Sandton, the people in the store there laughed at me saying "We dont even have signal here, how could they tell you we will test your modem????". They also told me that they would not swap my modem unless I had the original: box, manual, cd, contract, blah blah.. I called Sentech, very angry in the parking lot, and they promised to have a new modem delivered to my house the next day. After the next day came and went, I called them. They told me "we are not in the business of delivering anything. The person that told you this will be corrected." -- VERY NICE AFTER BEING SENT ACROSS TOWN FOR NOTHING. Anyway, I did not have the box, so I kept using a defective modem for 2 more weeks until they canged the policy and I could return my modem for a new one. (another trip to Sandton).

Then I was down for 4 days because I could connect, but not browse. The IP address was on their local subnet. After 4 days I had to re-install my computer to correct problems with their software.

I'm not going to even discuss the bandwidth issue. I am paying for 256k, I have not seen anything above 40k in 3 months. Some periods it is so bad that you can't even get web pages to come up.

In the beginning of June, for some strange reason, I could now connect to 110 (I guess I was not too far away after all). I have been connecting to 110 until last night. Last night the service went down, and now I can not connect to 110 anymore. I have called them all day today to find out why, and all I get is "someone will call you".

I am now writing this to you, freezing my fingers off, with my patio door open, modem extending out the patio door and cables all over my flat... to get base 126.

The bandwith is very bad, the software is buggy, the tech support is !#!@#! bad, even the hardware is bad.

Anyone else having similar problems??

I assume your on the tower 110 in linksfield? I make the assumption because it has been going up and down the whole of today and last night. The thing I can say is that it seems to be working amazingly well tonight. Where about are you that you can also connect to tower 126? I tried to take my modem to a friend and we got tower 126 and also got constant error 628 or whatever that remote computer error is. I think its the tower.

Seems like it is time to go down to the quick store and buy some pringles. I have a large frisco can if your interested :p

I am in Edenglen. From what I understand, I am on a hill which makes reception to 110 very strong (Linksfield). If I work at it long enough, I can get a weaker signal to 126 from the patio. The modem wants to connect to 110 (stronger) but if you play with the patch antenna, while turning modem on and off, eventually it connects to 126 (with half the signal strength of 110).

No luck last night or this morning. 110 still says "the remote computer did not respond". No word from my "friends" at Sentech either.

They can't cop out by saying I am too far away anymore. I was connecting just fine to 110 for weeks.

I only hope the weather warms up if I am knocked off 110 for good.

:)

Try reset the modem and use mysignal. The reset solved my similar problem. Unclip the back and push the little button with a pencil or something.

Use the Sentech zone locator to get the co-ordinates of your house, then use nicroets's tower distance calculator at http://rational.co.za/MyWireless/calculate.html to get your distance and bearing from all your closest towers. If you are less than 5.7km from 110, then you are within range.

I dont get this, why are we supposed to go to all these extremes to get good service?? Is this a ****ing joke? SENHELLUSER, if I were you I would tell them to take it and shove it. If I had a penny for every person on the Sentech Network that moaned I would be uber rich. It is disgusting that we have to drive around while these ****s sit back and pick another false excuse from their excuse card. WE ARE THE BOFH. Not Sentech. I say **** them
