800 bays is a lot. it would cost you megabucks to convert an old building into a parkade this size.

True but if say your initial outlay was R10 million. You could recoup those costs within 18 months.

Disclaimer: I know fsckall about parkade costs and building them. I was just thinking about getting rich quick.

The question posed in the topic was whether or not it was illegal. My response was in that context :)

No the question is not only about the legality, it has two parts:

1) What is your opinion on being charged for parking.
2) The legality of being charged for parking.

I don't feel that a company should charge its employees for parking. Owning a parking complex that charges people for parking while allowing employees to park for free is a different story. But simply charging your own employees for parking to make more money is despicable.

We pay R225 pm for open parking, and R450 for covered. The bs part is visitors get to park for free...in the same area...

I used to pay for parking at my old company. Didn't mind as it guaranteed me a spot. Company had around 100 staff members - so parking was a nightmare.

I mean... what if there is no other parking and now all of a sudden its being charged for.

Thoughts?
How much are you paying?

When I started, was paying R12000 per annum for a parking bay. No option of free parking, and there is no free parking anywhere close.

After 5 years, the policy of paying for parking has stopped - but no secretaries may park in the building now.

If the company pays, you pay. CTC or not, don't be dreaming you don't pay for it somehow.

If the company says you must pay, at least you can possibly find cheaper parking close by and no-one pays.

Worth a thought :)

Used to pay R65 a day.
Car-Pool with my brother now. Free parking FTW.
