Hopefully learned beings on this board can help me out here.

Just got the Acer Aspire 1 Netbook (XP version) with a Top Up 1G package.

After spending the entire evening reading through the forums, I am none the wiser as to the following:

1. I can connect via the supplied "Globe Trotter Connect" but not via the Vodafone software - all I get with the Vodafone is "connecting" (after entering my pin) and squat else  The Vodafone software 'offers' bandwidth usage which the Globe Trotter sofware don't?

2. Would the MDMA software work on my hardware (still trying to find out what 3G modem this thing has built in)?

2. What is the safest (most secure) way to connect - and remember plse I am a noob on this one? :p

3. How does one protect one self against bandwidth theft?

Advice on the above would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to MyBB Forums.

Your answers:

1) Just use the Globetrotter. If you want bandwidth usage monitoring, i suggest using some of the other tools as noted here on the forums. Personally, NetMeter does a great job.

2) Maybe it will, Maybe it wont, Maybe only halfway. Try it and find out.

2) [Yes you had two number 2's] No such thing. Just connect. No one way is any different from he other.

3) Bandwidth theft only applies to someone actually stealing from you, like accessing your unsecured WiFi router to gain access to your home network and thus using your internet connection. I'm going to go ahead and assume you dont have any such.
When it comes to single-pc 3G use, there is no such thing as bandwidth theft. There is however the cold hard ignorance, misinformation, and lack of any knowledge as to how things work from people who have software on their pc's that auto update.
Furthermore, 90% of such data loss is due to virusses and other malware.
Go ahead and go purchase for yourself a proper internet security package. Personally, i use Kaspersky Internet Security, but any of the other products do the job just fine (Norton/Symantec, McAffee, BitDefender, etc).
Lastly, dont be stupid. Seriously. If it applies in real life, it applies on the internet too.
When last did you receive free porn magazines in your postbox? Never? Really?
Wow, dont be surprised then when you do receive and open such mail online and get a virus...

Educate YOURSELF. Nothing better to learn from than your own experiences.

Only use software counters as a guideline. Use USSD (*111#) or vodacom4me to keep track of your data.
2. Would the MDMA software work on my hardware (still trying to find out what 3G modem this thing has built in)?
There's a good chance it will, it sounds like your built-in card is an Option GlobeTrotter. If MDMA detects it, click on the Device Info button to find out exactly which device you have. If not, send me an email I'll try and add support for your device.

Stay off MTN! :p
