Any preference in transmission? Manual, auto or DSG?

Given the requirements my first choice would be this mint 2005 C180K with a mere 130,000KM on the clock. Even in Classic trim it still has all the luxury one could wish for and the autobox adds to the luxury feel. If taken to an independant specialist for services this lady will gracefully age while staying reliable with enough power from it's super charged 1.8 engine.

Second choice would be the old favourite, a Corolla 1.6 with Professional trim. Very nice cars to drive just a pity about the lack of steering mounted audio controls. With a bit of digging around you will no doubt be able to find a 1.8 Advanced spec model with a bit more grunt. It has all the creatures comforts and whilst no being as luxurious as the Mercedes it will be cheap to maintain and last a lifetime while keeping it's value.

Third option, and a personal favourite, is a bit of mix of the above. Opel Astra H in Enjoy trim level. Don't let the hatch fool you, this boot will take a lot of stuff. You actually have a choice of two, first being a nippy 1.8 petrol sold by the owner in Robertson and the other is a 1.9 CDTi sold by the same dealer as the Mercedes. Very understated and overlooked these cars are a pleasure to drive and were imported from Germany as opposed to being assembled locally - the offer a lot of quality at the price.

Honda Civic... or an a3

Hyundai Getz aint a bad choice but tbh its not in the same league ad the aforementioned cars

dont get a mk1 tt either. tyre replacment is expensive as is if anythibg goes wrong like 1.8 turbo...

Considering the fact that after a couple years of usage, mine has hardly depreciated, it must be the best buy I have ever made.

That 5cyl. Volvo is a stonker if you put your foot down, I'd prefer it over the Beemer if I had to decide between those two. Not sure if nearing 200,000km is a problem, they seems like cars that can handle high mileage easily. About the Astra, I'd take the 103kw 1.8 petrol any time.

Nice suggestions.

Not interested at all in a BMW?

Sure, am open to it, but am leaning VW/Audi/Merc/Lexus/Volvo.

I quite like the idea of owning two A4 B7s. ;) But another one is not necessary for a daily driver. I'm seriously looking out for a Golf/Jetta 4 (with armrest) with around 150,000km.

P.S. Only buying private, no dealers.

Seriously considering something like this, if I can get it for closer to R40,000 then I should stand to lose next to nothing over a couple of years/while under 200,000km.

Although my eyes are peeled for a Highline 2.0L.

Please keep the recommendations coming, Gumtree links, etc. :) Private deals preferable.

Roux, thanks a lot for this, appreciate your time and input. Definitely a manual, but will consider a reliable auto. Please do follow up with some private sale links, if you're keen.

Sorry I forgot the bit about going private. Only car I referred to that was for sale privately was the 1.8 petrol Astra for sale in Robertson. Enjoy trim models do come with armrest, have all round electric windows and 6 airbags. I never got the armrest thing until owning a car that has one.

Alas, if you are going to spend that kind of money and don't mind so much for high mileage my first choice would still be a W203 Class. Just look at that mint condition 2003 C180K with less than 150,000km on the clock going for R82k. Way better deal than the 2008 Astra 1.8 which has 166,000km covered.

Do finance companies like Wesbank cater for vehicles older than 10 years?

Very nice, have been looking at these - something with black leather and manual would be fantastic.

The immediate pluses are armrest and MFS/steering wheel controls.

The down side is 2003. If I am to look at an Audi A3/A4 2007 model, it comes with armrest, MFS, MP3 CD playback, stock sub woofer, etc.

Very hard not considering getting another B7 if I am to spend R80,000. 2007 BMWs and Mercs seem a fair bit more expensive...

Finding it difficult to move away from the brand.

Golf/Jetta 4 (or similar class of car - Astra?) would be great for daily driving in the city. Open road I'd prefer a higher end car, which I have the B7 for.

If I was to get another B7, it would be great for city and open road, while preserving low kms on my current special B7.

I don't mind putting in the extra if I know I'll be getting it out again.

Another consideration is insurance, a 2.0 B7 would be a R600 pm, imagine a Golf/Jetta 4/Astra around R250 - R300.

Sorry to harp on, great having you guys as a bouncing board. :)

Well if you are going the VAG way, I'd say stick to an A4. For this kind of money you will get cars with more or less the same mileage with the bigger luxury sedans being a few years older. Unless you have problems with clearing finance for it I see no reason why one should pick a newer hatchback over an older sedan.

Plus, you know a bit about B7s so if you get one on a better deal than a W203 or E90 its pretty easy to decide.

Some suggestions if I may...

The S40 2.0 will be more reliable than any Merc/BMW/Audi. Yes, I have owned one.

The 2.0 also has a timing chain which means no expensive cambelt services. They are reasonably frugal - I got around 7.4l/100km at 130km/h with cruise control. Very comfortable and comes with all the bells and whistles.

Bought the wife's current S40 D5 from Volvo Hatfield:

Why no Accord/Civic love PP?

Love them, will give it some more thought.

My dad has one.

I don't think I'd be able to get a +-2007 though, with MP3 playback, etc. with my budget.

R80k for a 2007 A4 B7 is insane value...

What derivative does he have? I see a few of the recently posted well-priced Accords have disappeared over the last week, should indicate how quickly they sell. :D

The MP3 thing is an issue that's cheaply and easily solved by adding Bluetooth with an x-car link and using your phone. Better than outdated MP3 cds. ;)

R80K for a 2007 A4 B7 is really great value though and very tempting, but what's the condition of one of those like? Definitely seems like a bargain if it's in decent nick.
