You're trying to tell that I got a better GPU 3 years ago for cheaper?

This actually surprised me, and by surprised I mean the type of feeling a cat would get by trying to fly a kite.

My old Radeon 5670, I just dug it up going through my old PC stuff in my cupboard.

It was R999 from Chaos Computers, we all know Chaos was never the cheapest.

So, for fun I wanted to compare it to today's sub R1000 GPU's and laugh at the difference, well I didn't find anything funny.

Compared it to every sub R1000 GPU on Wootware (that isn't on special, looking at you Powercolor!), because the GPU I bought was not on special, so let's keep it fair.

Looking at my sub R1000 options, they are;

-GeForce GT630
-Sapphire 7730

Let's do the comparison

GeForce GT630 vs HD 5670

The HD destroys it, boasting 25% higher effective memory clock speed, 25% higher memory clock speed, 304 more shading units, Twice as many render output processors.

If you look at Pixel Rate and FPP, the difference really shows.
It really makes me wonder, what the hell are Nvidia even trying to sell at this price point?

Now, the 7730 vs the 5670 is a much more fair fight, with the 7730 being a faster GPU, but that's not saying much, given the 3 year difference.

It has Around 15% higher effective memory clock speed, Around 15% higher memory clock speed and more than 3x better CLBenchmark raytrace score*, however the 5670 has more shading units.

*keep in mind CLBenchmark makes use of DirectX that was not around when the 5670 was around so the architecture of the 5670 was not optimized for it, it's like expecting a PS4 game to run on a PS3.

Now 15% might sound good, but it has been 3 years, and 3 years in terms of technological advancement is a long time.

Honestly, if I were to overclock that 5670 by 100 Mhz it would basically be better, now I'm not saying that overclocking is a good or valid argument, but theoretically that card could last you 3+ years if you OC'd it and wanted to compete with GPU's in its price point.

Sadly I could not find any actual gaming benchmarks comparing these cards, for obvious reasons though. Those would really tell a story.

The point here is that I am saddened by the lack of improvement in low end GPU's. It's almost as if it has regressed.

Amen brothers

I bought a HD6970 for R3k back in 2011 and am horrified by current prices for similar or better cards.

The Rand is about 40% weaker than in 2011, on average. Take in inflation over 3 years, which would be 6% per annum - which is nowhere near what it really is, but that's a discussion for another day.

That gives you, in today's terms, an equivalent of about R1667, give or take. It's not an exact science, but a pretty fair indicator, nonetheless.

See how current cards with that price, compare with your old one.

Agreed. R.I.P. gaming rig.
I really wanted to get a new card for stuff like Watch_dogs etc. ...but my 6870 will have to keep on fighting the good fight. No way in hell I'm shovelling out R3K+ for something that's still considered midrange.

I can tell you one thing though. I've become a bloody expert at optimizing the flying snot out of a Windows 8 installation to squeeze every single last drop performance from my system :D

LOL :D Same here, but on Windows 7 still.

I know stuff about optimising Windows that might be considered illegal in some countries. :p

I was lucky enough to receive a GTX 660TI 2GB OC via RMA as a replacement for a GTX 550 TI.

Yah, I paid R670 for 4GB in April. I know for a fact that the beginning of the year it was going for R350 at the same place.

I am not sure how true it is but read an article somewhere that the PC industry is dying a slow death due to tablets dominating the market.

Maybe the reason for such steep price increase cos important duties - wish import duties were free like in America.

Slowly the console will be the affordable option for gaming, not saying it would be as powerful but with these prices :(

Especially if you look at the upgrade cycle, PC's are upgraded every two + years. It may just be ram, maybe ram and CPU etc, then another year or two and its time for GPU and HDD.

If you bought a PS3 (which I have friends that did) at R6600 when it launched, they just replaced it +- 8 years later at a cost of R6300. In that same period I have spent close to 15k on my PC if not more and I can no longer upgrade it due to the MOBO and CPU, which means I need to buy a new PC again.

Personally I would always buy a PC for the versatility as I do more then just game on it, but I can understand why PC is losing market share.

If you're spending that much on PC upgrades that often you're obviously not doing it out of necessity, so I don't think it's really comparable.

There are no import duties on computer parts. Only VAT.

Yeah prices are murderous....every time I see a "Help me build a PC" thread I feel sorry for the oke.

Might glad I bought my gear when I did....just missed all the BS.

If your friends bought e.g. 15 games at R600 each then you'd be equal again. Even if the console is cheaper than equivalent PC hardware its still not nearly as good a deal with all the sales/bundles you can get on PC.
