This actually surprised me, and by surprised I mean the type of feeling a cat would get by trying to fly a kite.
My old Radeon 5670, I just dug it up going through my old PC stuff in my cupboard.
It was R999 from Chaos Computers, we all know Chaos was never the cheapest.
So, for fun I wanted to compare it to today's sub R1000 GPU's and laugh at the difference, well I didn't find anything funny.
Compared it to every sub R1000 GPU on Wootware (that isn't on special, looking at you Powercolor!), because the GPU I bought was not on special, so let's keep it fair.
Looking at my sub R1000 options, they are;
-GeForce GT630
-Sapphire 7730
Let's do the comparison
GeForce GT630 vs HD 5670
The HD destroys it, boasting 25% higher effective memory clock speed, 25% higher memory clock speed, 304 more shading units, Twice as many render output processors.
If you look at Pixel Rate and FPP, the difference really shows.
It really makes me wonder, what the hell are Nvidia even trying to sell at this price point?
Now, the 7730 vs the 5670 is a much more fair fight, with the 7730 being a faster GPU, but that's not saying much, given the 3 year difference.
It has Around 15% higher effective memory clock speed, Around 15% higher memory clock speed and more than 3x better CLBenchmark raytrace score*, however the 5670 has more shading units.
*keep in mind CLBenchmark makes use of DirectX that was not around when the 5670 was around so the architecture of the 5670 was not optimized for it, it's like expecting a PS4 game to run on a PS3.
Now 15% might sound good, but it has been 3 years, and 3 years in terms of technological advancement is a long time.
Honestly, if I were to overclock that 5670 by 100 Mhz it would basically be better, now I'm not saying that overclocking is a good or valid argument, but theoretically that card could last you 3+ years if you OC'd it and wanted to compete with GPU's in its price point.
Sadly I could not find any actual gaming benchmarks comparing these cards, for obvious reasons though. Those would really tell a story.
The point here is that I am saddened by the lack of improvement in low end GPU's. It's almost as if it has regressed.
