YouTube buffering on Telkom fibre

We have a 10mbps Telkom fibre line with Telkom capped data. We experience a lot of buffering on recently uploaded 720p videos. These are videos uploaded less than 5 hours ago. My assumption is that these videos have not yet been cached on the local SA YouTube servers and are therefore streamed using international bandwidth.

Does anyone else experience slow buffering of recently uploaded YouTube videos? Is this normal?

Completely normal - Takes a while for them to be cached in SA after they have been viewed for the first time here.

Is this a limitation on YouTube's part or is it due to limited international bandwidth provided by Telkom? Would using data from another ISP solve the problem?

mini necro..

Is this still happening? Some videos play flawlessly in 1080p with nothing else using my 10MB line. Others a few minutes later can barely sustain 720p..

I've resorted to downloading them and watching offline, which takes a bit too much effort (though I get to skip the ads).

I'm using the google 8.8.8.8 DNS, if that helps / hinders?

Maybe you can watch my stream and tell me how it behaves...

Haha, free plug! Nice..

Your stream works well. 1080p60fps, no problem.

SO, I'll just have to download non-cached videos that don't stream lekker.

If you use Google DNS it often bypasses local caches, so best not to use it.
