Proposed new rules for South Africa's Internet domains

The .ZA Domain Name Authority (Zadna) has published draft regulations for South Africa’s registry operators and registrars that offer .ZA domains.

Registry operators manage domain name registrations and provide services needed for those domains to work.

Unsure. I'm waiting for them to work through it and formulate opinions.

I expect there will be a lot of questions that people want to raise at that "members' engagement session".

What grates me is the steady erosion of the values I've always associated with the Internet.

And the web3 space use the weirder ones like .space .career .finance .xyz etc etc .

This is something ZADNA doesn't seem to understand.

If it wants .za to remain relevant, they are doing the opposite of what needs to be done.

More like have BBBEE credentials if you want to be a registry not register a domain.

This. The requirement for verification of registrants of domains will be an onerous one which will add additional costs. I don't think any registrar or TLD requires this other than a declaration which can be challenged if necessary.

"Registrar fees" means the per-domain fees collected by Registrars from Registrants, and payable to Registries in accordance with Domain Name price determinations of the Authority."

Does this mean that the Authority is going to levy a new "fee" to the registrant as the domain cost pricing is automatically taken by the Registry at the time of registration or renewal. (Systems are automated.)

This is complete and utter crap! I'm a one-man show that's developed my own EPP software and registered as a registrar about +10 years ago. I've been hosting domains for the last 20 years. These new "rules" will put me out of business! Government is supposed to help the small business, not close us down! FFS!

Time for tld’s and gtld’s to replace your .za domains

As registrars we’ll push back on the proposed draft how ever as we all know, the comments are merely procedural and nothing that we say or contribute will be considered.

What about our right to privacy?
Why is government so interested in spying on citizens?

Other countries don't require this so don't use the excuses "think of the children" or "War against Terror" as that is not logical - (seems child issues/terror only a problem in za domains)
