Zapper turns smartphones into card machines

Zapper has announced that their merchants will now be able to accept tap-on-phone payments.

“After a successful pilot phase, we have rolled out new functionality available to all Zapper merchants, which enables them to accept physical card payments as well as mobile wallet payments,” said Zapper CEO Brett White.

No FNB Pay mentioned. This is what Apple is planning also but it could take years to come to our shores judging by how long it took Apple Pay. This is progress, although I don’t trust that there won’t be any malicious Android apps that can bypass the security measures. This is why I prefer NFC on my phone and not my physical card.

Doubt it would see the same delays as Apple Pay itself now that we have that enabled.

Our problem is rather getting the local market to implement and embrace Apple Pay.

Apple’s implementation will also include digital ID’s and Driver’s Licenses, our incompetent government will take decades to adapt our current systems to take advantage of this.

Oh yes, on that front it will be problematic.

This is great. I always wondered how merchants trust payments on Zapper. For most they trust the display on your phone and they don't even seem to get a conformation SMS.

I'm assuming tap on glass will accept the various Apple/Samsung/Garmin/Fitbit Pay tokenized cards. This would negate the need to type out my PIN on someone's phone

I do not see how this will work securely without a 2fa approval of the transaction on the payee's device.
I would not trust the transaction amount showed on the receivers terminal nor typing my pin on a "loosely" managed/secured device.

Wot? They do get a confirmation.
I'm sure but most don't check, you just show them the success on your screen and they are happy. I have seen some merchants get an sms or they get a notification on the POS they are using but many are not really doing anything.

Ya, the PIN is an issue, there will be a lot of hesitancy on the customer side. The one solution is that you use a fingerprint instead of the PIN like with FNB's 2FA.
So you tap your phone on the merchants phone and validate your fingerprint on your own phone which will then send a tokenised PIN through a secure (and trusted ) application on the merchant side.

Doesn't sound true at all. I've always had to wait else the waiter will run after me when I just walk out.

Great idea, but like the normal tap terminals, how do you prevent anyone from maliciously tapping their phone against your back pocket? At least with the normal terminals, mostly only shops have them (rented from the bank). Now anyone could have a terminal ...

You get those special wallets... or just keep all your cards together.
For your phone to tap you need it to be unlocked right ?

Why would you carry any valuables in your back pocket?

You just described the MDES standard used by Apple Pay etc. It's a far more secure system than PIN entry on the POS
