The whole situation is just sad. Telkom is sad. The goverment is sad. ICASA (trying their best as they are) is sad. So much for trying to set up a internet business cheaply.

My comment as posted to itweb:
Zazu should be chastised for preying on unsuspecting adsl users. Who are they to define what a responsible user is when even telkom is advocating (through recent print ads) the use of ADSL for downloading movies and music and playing online games - each of which can be bandwidth intensive.

Everyone - the staff writer included - might benefit from a quick perusal of the various forums available - including MyADSL.co.za

ISP's step up to the fricken plate and TAKE ON TELKOM!

I am sorry! Any ISP coming out and saying that a responsible broadband user is somebody that doesn't download, only reads email and surfs WWW sites can go and "do the dirty" with themselves as far as I am concerned! Stick it where the sun don't shine boys!

A 30G account should not cost more than R300 in South Africa! Finish and klaar!

The non-disclosure clauses in Telkom's contracts with ISP's should be ignored on mass by the ISP's and they should collectively stand up and kick Telkom in the round ones!

ISPs, STEP UP AND TAKE ON TELKOM!!!!

Making a bold advertisement saying 30gig for cheap R3000 wont put them in the spotlight, they live on people who dont think, for some the R149 for 1gig is instantly a cheap sentence, they dont think that it is R220 odd for 3gig. This is the kind of advertising I hate, its intended to feed on the misinformed, especially those users who doesnt know what 1 or 2 or 3 gig means even.

Thats the problem right there. No one wants to stand up against Telkom, because they will get cut-off. I had a chat to my Dad, a COO of a large company and CEO of a subsidary and he said that companies will not boycott Telkom, because that could effectively be the end of the company. IMO companies feel that there is nothing that can be done against Telkom, so they put up with it. Telkom have a much larger piggy bank than most companies and they will inevitably outlast any company may it be a court case or a boycott.

The solution; Apply pressure on the DoC to open the market ASAP (not "Managed Liberalisation"). If large companies do this, Telkom can't do a thing. ICASA on the otherhand should simply do it's job in the meantime and regulate the market until true competition arrives.

No ISP will stand up to Telkom because they stand to make more money from the per gig model! They will all add the markup per gig and pocket the change!

Per gig billing is priced according to the market, and not according to the cost. Telkom and the other ISPs are brainwashing the public to accept this pricing model because somehow everytime you transfer data the cable gets a bit worn out and someone has to work harder to move that data around.

The responsible user crap pisses me off - because instead of geting ADSL and just leaving it on I have to bitch and moan at the whole family "What are you doing on the internet. Hurry up! Dont use up the bandwidth! blah blah blah.."

Am I supposed to get a separate account for my wife? And what about people with kids, parents????? WTF about small businesses? ADSL is not for a single user, single device, unlike with mobile wireless broadband.

Because of their monopoly Telkom can introduce their pricing model and create the impression that they are competing in a completely different industry: wireless broadband! But ADSL is not the same! Its a completely different industry!

Of course - the best way to silence the ISP is for Telkom to make them more money. Lets face it - the ISP has an cushy job these days.

Internet in South Africa

Hi guys,

Firstly I'm gonna disagree with some you here. I'm a Zazu subscriber and these prices are outdated to begin with (Zazu now charges R99.00 for 1GB, and R125.00 for 3GB), and I'm not sure what their policy on 'responsible use' is, but it's definitely got nothing to do with games, movies, etc, because I do this all on my Zazu account and never had any problems. I guess there should be packages for 'low use' like people who only need mail and stuff, the 1GB+Line package for R179 appears comparable to dial-up (if you include the phone calls) but at least it's faster. Either way, I'm not happy with ANY ISPs offering at the moment! The price per GB is just too expensive!

On the issue of 'all-you-can-eat' I must say I agree with them, 'cause the ISPs that provide this service either charge a fortune or provide slow service. R6500 on a 4Mbps line??? Is somebody crazy??? (This is Internet Solutions' price!) Then there are guys who say 'uncapped ADSL' but after 10 days if you've used more than maybe 10 or 30GB they throttle your speed, some other services are always throttled, so I haven't heard of a true 'all-you-can-eat' package (if someone knows, please tell the world!). They give you the bandwidth, but they stop you from using it! Show me an ADSL connections that runs 4Mbps from day 1 till day 30, constantly uploading and downloading (and at a decent price!), then I will definitely become that ISPs customer!

The third issue is TELKOM! They are worse than SARS! I heard they charge like R60 or R70 (I'm not sure of the exact price) for ISPs per GB!!! (international traffic), if you pay, let's say, R99 to your ISP for 1GB and they have to give Telkom R70, no wonder they don't lower their prices!!!! What about admin? Salaris for admin and tech staff? Servers, leased lines, domains, web sites, tax, all those other expenses, how is an ISP supposed to make money with Telkom in the way? How can an ISP provide us with decent internet with Telkom in the way??? I'd say some billionaire should read this and invest in new internet infrastructure for South Africa, install some cables or satellites that link with a foreign ISP and provide internet service from there, get an ADSL infrastructure, then provide wholesale ADSL to ISPs and make some decent money in the progress, why can nobody do this? Has nobody got enough money? Or are the rich people scared to invest? Or are they scared of Telkom? I say screw Telkom!!! We don't need them!

In South-East Asia there are internet companies charging something like R20 a month for uncapped, unshaped ADSL at 1Mbps speed!!!! Why not here???? What about poverty in South Africa? I thought it supposed to be a big problem! People would have more money if they spend less on internet!

Well, just my 2c...

Depressed, sick and tired...

Why the hell does the vb board software not have a feature that blocks people with <10 posts from pulling up threads older than say 3 months? It's not like it requires a massive brain wave to come up with something like that.
