Harare - Zimbabwe's biggest sewage plant has broken down, sending tons of raw effluent into a major river and polluting the water supply of the capital, say city authorities.

Harare's Firle sewage plant had been down since last week and required at least Z$20bn ($80m) to fix a huge burden for a country already in the grip of its worst economic crisis in decades.

According to reports, officials from the national water authority said half of the raw sewage from Harare - a city of at least 1.5 million - was now discharged into a river that flowed into the capital's main water reservoir.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority declined to comment further on the issue on Monday. But, the reports said the discharge of the untreated sewage was "posing a serious health hazard downstream".

Man that place is literally falling apart. Now Harare doesn't seem to have clean water. $80,000,000 to fix? Where are they going to get that cash? Oh, I suppose Robby could tap into one of his accounts, but that would require doing something for all people in Zim.

so true

Well Vespax,
due to my business I have more than the average contact with Zimbabwe, especially the government dudes. Believe me, these guys are not having a bad time. Not the low-downs, the more "senior" guys. These guys are having a royal jol. They actually have money, PLENTY!!! When we go there we are treated in 5-star style. They live like kings. And the rest of the people, well, sod them. In the words of one of our frequent contacts, "Africa is tough, if you don't grap what you want before anyone else, well, then you deserve to lose". (BTW, this dude owns four massive farms recently "acquired" by means of the so called land-reforms. It is really sickening to see how little these guys actually feel for their "brothers". The average "racist" white in SA feels more for the normal Zimbabwean.
But then again, this is seemingly the story of Africa.

I believe the are people with money there. Every country has a population of wealthy people. So I don't doubt that.

What I am saying is, the gov't seems to be strapped for foreign $. Now they need to fix this or the **** is really going to hit them in the face. Common people who are used to flushing toilets might actually consider taking action when they can't find clean water to drink.

The rich can always buy/import what ever they want. I have no concern for their struggles. ZANU-PF will manage just fine unfortunately.

BTW - I get the feeling some gov't officials here think the same way.

Just goes to show what some locals want us to believe. The mirror must be becoming unbearable. Thanks for the real life experience feedback.
