Former deputy president Jacob Zuma won the backing of a majority in a poll on Tuesday as the best choice to lead the country after emerging unscathed from rape and graft charges.

Fifty-seven percent of the 8 137 people who responded to the poll conducted by the Sowetan said they wanted Zuma to succeed President Thabo Mbeki who steps down in 2009.
-
The Sowetan said the voting patterns differed with the overwhelming majority who responded by telephone - and identified by the paper as having lower incomes - solidly backing the veteran Zulu politician.

But 56 percent who used the Internet to vote were against Zuma, the Sowetan said, adding that this "could be read to mean that Msholozi (Zuma's clan name) is not very popular with the middle class".

Just because he is popular, doesnt mean he is pratical, does he have a mandate? plan? idea? on how to run this country? We have been incredibly lucky with both Mandela & Mbeki, lets just hope that if he does become president, he becomes more responsible.

please state who you would want to succeed mbeki
a) mickey mouse
b) donald duck
c) the hulk
d) zuma

our survey says "57% of people want zuma to succeed mbeki"

our survey also showed 43% of respondents would prefer donald duck running the country (interestingly, mickey mouse and the hulk got zero votes...we assume this is because our respondents correctly identified them as being ficticious characters)

lies, damn lies, and statistics

That's his opinion and he's entitled to it as this is a democracy, I don't really expect people like him to approve on ANY black president but then again such people's opinions count for nothing, it's the vote that counts.

so his opinion means nothing?

idiots vote for idiots. I like it. has a nice ring to it. yeah, the ring of truth.

True. I'll count you amongst that part of the electorate he was referring to then?

Hey Angelo. You really do think we're a bunch of racists. We're as proud of any south african - no matter what the colour. We just want it to work - and as we are now in the position you were in (re: BEE and AA) - you can imagine - that we don't think this is working. (And 1 million expat south africans would attest to that.) (And 3/4's don't tell the gub they're not coming back.)

Zuma? C'mon guy - the man cannot run a bank account (witness all his fund raising) - and his "generally corrupt relationship with Schaik."

"If you give idiots a vote then they are quite likely to vote for idiots."

If I recall right, that is much the same argument against democracy used by Plato and Socrates. By definition, in democracy, the rulers are chosen by the average, which, again by definition, means sub-optimum. Certainly seems to be the case here.

Serious question.

What does everyone have against Zuma being president.

He was found innocent, rightly, of rape.
He was never found guilty for fraud....

Obviously his moral standing sucks but there seems to be more to it and for the life of me I can't figure it out. I also instantly say I don't want him to be president but I don't know why... Can someone enlighten me?

Oh and before you judge me Angelo I couldn't think of anyone worse for the presidency than Tony "whine whine whine" Leon...

It's not a colour thing.
