Vodacom reneges on HSDPA launch promise, again
Prospective 3G broadband users have waited patiently for this exciting offer, but to no avail.
Towards the end of 2005 it was clear that Vodacom had problems keeping their promise as eager users were faced with an uncharacteristic silence from the mobile operator.
Pieter Uys, Vodacom’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted problems with software issues and data card availability as the reason for the delay.
He pulled the launch date back until mid January 2006.
MyADSL contacted Vodacom again after it became apparent that the ‘middle of January’ was another meaningless pledge aimed to appease customers.
A Vodacom spokesperson told MyADSL that the HSDPA launch date is now set for the first quarter of 2006.
This was about as specific a date as Vodacom are willing to offer with the term ‘imminent’ used to describe the launch.
When asked why there was a delay in the launch of their HSDPA service, the availability of data cards was bandied about, but no concrete reason was given.
Vodacom has held the prestigious image of being one of the few telecom companies to play open cards with the public.
This latest failure to communicate service delivery problems seriously tarnishes their reputation.
The late launch and their unwillingness to supply valid reasons for the latest delay make them look more and more like their majority shareholder.
