Telkom 4 Mbps ADSL upgrades speeding ahead
DSL1024 subscribers started reporting late last week that that their line speeds were already upgraded to 4 Mbps. This does not mean that the full service has been upgraded to 4 Mbps, but rather that subscribers’ ‘lines’ have been upgraded.
Telkom said that the projected date for implementation is the 15th of September, and it is encouraging to see that they are running ahead of schedule.
Telkom confirmed that the upgrades started on Friday the 25th of August, and that the line synchronization portion has already been completed.
The full service upgrade should happen over the next few days after which users will be able to put the new 4 Mbps ADSL service to the test.
“…the service change portion will happen over the next few days. Only after this change will the network reflect possible increase in traffic. Currently all services are still shaped to 1024kbps beyond the DSLAM,” said Steven Hayward, Managing Executive – Retail Marketing at Telkom.
“The official date set for completion is 15 September 2006, but most customers will start to experience the higher speed in the next few days,” Hayward pointed out.
It is refreshing to see that the rollout of this new service, although long overdue, is ahead of schedule and that local Internet users will get a taste of true broadband soon.
