Hetzner to open second data centre in Johannesburg
Hetzner is currently running a data centre in Cape Town which services over 32 000 domains making it the biggest specialist web hosting company in South Africa with an excess of 16% of the market share in this area.
Hetzner is looking to expand even further and having identified that the current utilization of data centers is approximately 10%, indicating an opportunity for further growth in the hosting market.
The move to Johannesburg is not only to expand their market share but also to enable Hetzner to provide better services to Johannesburg-based companies and clients said Athena Turner, marketing and communications manager at Hetzner.
“It is much easier to service the Johannesburg market if we are in Johannesburg,” said Turner.
Turner added that Hetzner are committed to providing first-rate shared hosting services and they are looking to expand into the dedicated hosting market.
Hans Wenke, managing director of Hetzner, reiterrated that they have seen an increasing demand for dedicated and co-location hosting.
Co-location hosting is where the customer ‘rents space’ from the hosting company. The client supplies the server and configures the system to meet his own specific requirements. The hosting company in return supplies a secure data facility with support.
Wenke added that: “With the opening of our data centre in Johannesburg, we are making provision to meet this increased demand and are confident that the Johannesburg SMME and mid-corporate market will benefit from our data facilities and proven customer service.”
According to Wenke, Hetzner have had customers on the waiting list for months in anticipation of the opening of the Johannesburg data centre and with traffic prices as low as R0.09 per Megabyte it is understandable that people are queuing.
Hetzner have been in the Web hosting business since 1999 with their Cape Town data centre opening its doors early 2002.
Wenke reports, that Hetzner in this period have held to strict standards of service excellence.
“At Hetzner we always look for ways that we can achieve optimum network performance, reliability and customer satisfaction at a reasonable cost,” said Wenke.
He continues to states that Hetzner take downtime, every webmaster’s nightmare, seriously.
Over the past 4 years Hetzner’s network has an uptime exceeding 99.9% reported Wenke. They ensure that when a problem does occur they deal with the matter within minutes.
Hetzner’s new Johannesburg-based data centre includes the following features:
–100Mb fibre connection via UUNET’s network backbone with a second redundant fibre connection
–Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) installed plus a dedicated diesel power generator
–Fire control equipment
–Air-conditioning banks to cool the internal environment with an additional redundancy unit
–24/7 security and monitoring facilities
–The UPS and servers are both monitored around the clock with notification by e-mail and SMS to more than one support staff member.
