iBurst has released their new out-of-bundle data prices, a large improvement over their initially planned price increases which made headlines after it was released to their channel partners last week.
iBurst recently sent out their new planned data pricing to their resellers, which included a vast increase in out-of-bundle data rates. This massive price increase, up to 600% in some cases, drew sharp criticism from both iBurst subscribers and iBurst partners with many users threatening to jump ship should this come into effect.
iBurst however said that the “Booster Bandwidth pricing that was communicated to our channel partners, was sent out prematurely. The final decision on top up pricing had not been made yet.”
The wireless provider lodged new pricing with ICASA yesterday, and expects it to be approved within the next few days.
“We’ve received verbal approval from ICASA on this new pricing, and now just await the formal written approval. We felt that amidst all the negative publicity recently received, we couldn’t wait longer before announcing the new Bandwidth Booster pricing, hence issuing the press release this afternoon,” iBurst said.
The new pricing may be directly related to the outcry from consumers, something that iBurst did not directly address in their media release but that they did allude to in their subsequent statements.
“iBurst had originally lodged the higher Bandwidth Booster pricing with ICASA, but following internal discussions, we re-lodged the new pricing with ICASA today,” iBurst said.
Subscribers on iBurst’s “Play” packages will be able to buy 500 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R189 and 1 000 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R249. This means the price per out-of-bundle megabyte on these packages is 38 cents and 25 cents per megabyte, respectively.
These prices are still higher than the previous R 139-00 for 500 MB and R 229-00 for 1 GB of add-on data, but are significantly lower than the initial Booster Bandwidth rates of R 495-00 for 500 MB and R 853-00 for 1000 MB.
Subscribers on iBurst’s “Pro” packages will be able to buy 1 000 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R199 and 3 000 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R499. This means the price per out-of-bundle megabyte on these packages is 20 cents and 17 cents per megabyte, respectively.
These prices are again more expensive than the previous R 139-00 to R 179-00 for 1 GB (depending on the subscribers’ package type) and R 349-00 and R 439-00 for 3 GB (again depending on the subscribers’ package type).
The new "Pro" Bandwidth Booster prices are significantly lower than the previously suggested R 853-00 for 1000 MB, R 1540-00 for 2000 MB, R 2154-00 for 3000 MB, R 3630-00 for 6 GB and R 4950-00 for 9 GB.
An increase in bandwidth prices will seldom be welcomed in broadband circles, but users are likely to respect iBurst’s decision to review their initial pricing after consumers voiced their unhappiness about it.
