iBurst has launched a ‘special offer’ which they claim is one of South Africa’s most affordable entry level broadband packages.
The Play Special 40 megabyte package, which costs R 49-00 per month, provides users with speeds of up to 1 Mbps. iBurst said that this new offering “offers speeds up to 17 times faster than dial-up as well as unrestricted VoIP and Data Carry Over.”
“iBurst now possibly offers the most affordable entry level broadband package in South Africa,” said Thami Mtshali, CEO of iBurst. “Play Special is about getting people onto the first rung of the broadband ladder”
This claim is however very dubious as MTN has a ‘R 10-00 for 10 MB’ data bundle, which translates into R 1-00 per MB for a service with speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps.
Virgin Mobile’s out of bundle rate of 50c per MB may also make far more sense to price sensitive subscribers where a 40 MB bundle will cost R 20-00, far less than iBurst’s R 49-00.
Valid until 31 August 2007, subscribers have the option of including a laptop modem or USB modem for a total subscription fee of R69 per month or a desktop modem for a total subscription fee of R89 per month.
iBurst said that the new ‘Play Special’ includes a free mailbox with five aliases and a 10 megabyte limit plus a free fax2email service. Anti-virus and anti-spam protection is also available at no charge.
iBurst’s data top-up product, Bandwidth Booster, can be purchased by Play Special subscribers should they reach their monthly data allocation of 40 megabytes. They will be able to buy 500 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R189 and 1 000 megabytes of out-of-bundle data for R249.
Play Special subscribers selecting the R49 per month no modem option will be subscribed to a month-to-month contract, subscribers selecting the R69 per month laptop or USB modem option will be locked into a 24-month contact and subscribers selecting the R89 per month desktop modem option will also be subscribed to a 24-month contract.
How much is 40 MB
Low usage data packages are becoming commonplace in South Africa, and some uncertainty may arise as to what a user can achieve using 40 MB.
When using the iBurst service at full speed, a user will deplete the 40 MB allowance in just over 5 minutes. This effectively means that a user will have full speed use of 5 minutes per month on the new iBurst Play Special 40 package. This translates into just over R 9-00 per minute for using the service.
According to an online net usage calculator, http://mynetusage.info/data-usage-calculator , iBurst’s new offering will allow users to send and receive around 6 emails without attachments and 6 emails with attachments per day. This is however without any other usage like web surfing or VoIP usage. It will allow for either 8 minutes of web surfing per day or 20 minutes of VoIP usage per day.
