MyWireless takes on Vodacom and MTN 3G
Winston Smith, Sentech’s portfolio manager for broadband wireless said: “Users can get connectivity through 3G now, but the technology that meets today’s email and Internet requirements must also supply tomorrow’s – including tomorrow’s video, voice and data requirements.”
Smith states that Sentech’s broadband wireless offering is able to offer speeds up to ten times that of the cellular operators’ 3G download speeds.
The high cost of international bandwidth is the only factor that prevents Sentech from doing so.
According to Smith their offering will continue to trump 3G services even though there is much talk from cellular operators about a new technology called HSDPA which they are planning to roll out soon.
The uplink speed of HSDPA is never mentioned because it is only 64 Kbps stated Smith.
"Solutions in an Internet and email environment require adequate download and uplink speeds to send and receive information. Therefore users who wait for HSDPA to meet their desire for faster connectivity speeds might be disappointed. It’s all about looking at a solution holistically."
The final nail in the coffin according to Smith is that the 3G networks are also used to transmit voice which means that as the network becomes congested the transmission of data suffers.
Sentech’s network is tuned for data, making download speeds more stable.
The recent Wireless Ratings Report from MyADSL confirms that Sentech’s service is more stable but there is the drawback of decreased mobility.
The cellular operators are able to offer countrywide coverage even if it is at the slower speeds offered by GPRS.
So whilst Sentech does trump 3G offerings on many levels for true wireless nationwide coverage users have to look to the cellular operators.
But for a stable, reliable service with decent speeds there is no beating Sentech’s MyWireless, just make sure you stick to the Metropoles.
