MTN awarded 49% in Iran’s 2nd mobile operator
With the addition of Iran, MTN’s footprint extends to ten countries – nine of which are in sub-Saharan Africa including Nigeria and Uganda.
Given the near-saturation levels in the South Africa mobile telephony market, Iran is expected to be one of MTN’s most important markets as it continues to expand in Africa and the Middle East.
MTN, which pipped the Turkish firm Turkcell to get a stake in Irancell, on Monday paid a 300 million euro licence fee to the Iranian government ahead of the issuing of the cellular communications licence.
The Ministry of Communications and IT is currently in the process of issuing the licence to the Irancell consortium. A further announcement will be made when appropriate, the South African group said.
