Global mobile phone sales up 22% to 205.4m in Q3

Gartner, a provider of research and analysis on the information technology industry, also said that the three-month period was the biggest quarter since it started tracking the market on a quarterly basis in 2001.

Gartner’s Carolina Milanesi noted that year-on-year cellphone sales grew in all regions as replacements in mature markets continued to drive growth while users in emerging markets acquired their first handsets.

In developing markets including Africa, sales almost matched Western Europe with 39.7 million units – a 40% jump over the previous comparable period.

The main drivers included markets such as Nigeria, Turkey, Russia and South Africa whose mobile penetration level is now estimated at above 60%.

During the third quarter, the North American market grew 36.3 million mobile phones while 26.1 million units were sold in Latin America.

Second-placed Motorola had the largest market share increase among the top five vendors but Nokia retained its market leadership position with 32.6% share while Samsung came third followed by Sony Ericson and LG.
